Thanks for the compliment, but for some reason I find myself shooting my 10mm Glock 29 alot more often!!! Go figure!!! This just happens to be a gun that I stumbled across about a year ago LNIB w/ docs and cleaning kit for the right price. I've probably only put 100 rounds through it.

No sir, not de-horned. It is an early 1076 that has what appears to be a 1066 slide. There's no holster wear because it hasn't been carried. I'm probably going to out this one up for sale soon. I have bought way too many guns lately and momma is getting p.o.ed!

Smith & Wesson model 1026, it is the longer 5" barrel version of the 1076 4.25" barrel,


It is shown with the Straight back grips but have the Cured grips too!

What is the story on your 1046? Supposedly those are very rare guns with very few being made.

A very limited run of 148 in 1992. This gun is DAO
and has a very nice trigger pull. I just had new lamps put in the night sights at Trijicon.

I have a 1086 and want to know what is the difference in the '46 and '86 guns. Is it just barrel length? You are right about the DAO's having fantastic double actions, short and smooth. The thought of no safety or decocker is kind of scary sometime when I dwell on that subject.

I have a couple of 1046's also, like new in box. They are the same as the 1086, just a longer barrel.

On his request, I recently sold the 1076 back to the fellow who'd sold it to me. Before that I would carry it appendix IWB on hikes and occasionally around town.

I used to shoot 180-grain bullets at 1300 fps from the 4.25" tube all the time. I had Wolff extra-power recoil and firing pin springs on board.

When I replace the sights I had planned on replacing the firing pin spring also with a spring from Wolff.

The '76 sure does fit well IWB and does it better then my 1911A2 Compact did for sure.

Had my 1076 and it was a great pistol. But having small hands made it impossible to decock it with out shifting my hand, and the DA reach was waaaay to long for me. I would definitely grab a 1086 for the right price. Thanks for all the excellent pics guys.

I doubt that you could buy a nice 1086 for under $800 now days. And at that price I would raather have the 1086 then a new Sig, Glock, H&K or even a M&P for that matter. The 1086 has about the sweetest DAO trigger of them all, and IMHO even better the the Kimber LDA that feels gritty and yet is so light as to be dangerous. The 1086 is a moderate length, but smooth as butter, pull that really works well and allows for good shooting. It is one fine IWB gun and would be my first choice of any new gun on the market at present.

All that said I sometimes think I should not have bought the gun, because I very seldom dress where I could CC the gun and it has become a safe queen. I also need to get new night sights as origial are dead and I just don't carry because of those two reasons. Selling that gun would leave me thinking the rest of my days "Why did I ever sell my 1086 for???" like I have been with the Colt King Cobra 6" I bought new for $300 or $400 and was a beautiful shooting gun. But I just could not resist the idea of selling it for more then I paid for it less then a year after I bought the gun.

This afternoon I found a consignment 1076 at my local candy store. It is a new in the box unfired 1076 SN TFE586x for $690

It has the matching original box with serial numbers with oil paper, 2nd mag and original cleaning kit.

Is this a great price, a good price or an OK price just if I really like it?

Only difference is that the grip screws are now stainless. Hogue sent me the ones from the wood grips since the finish rubbed off the black ones and they began to rust.

I have an extended slide stop on the way from bad_man_ one. I will also be getting a .40 and .357 SIG barrel when they are available. I do plan on having it bead blasted, removing the warning on the right side of the gun. Probably will have Novak do it, but I'm unsure if I will get any other of their packages (was interested in the duty action trigger job and reliability package). Hopefully I can sell the Trijicon SA01s and pick up SA02s for it.

Screwball,
The glass bead blasting will not completely remove the laser etched warning on the side.
It gets burned deep into the grain structure of the Stainless Steel.
I have glass beaded my fair share.

There aren't many out there. I'm sure someone has the official numbers handy, but the 1086 and 1046 are the hardest to find. The 1046 is the full size DAO 10mm semi-auto, as the 1086 is the shorter barrel DAO 10mm.

That's right, there are only 151 of the S&W 1046 5.00" DAO (Rarest of the series) the S&W1086 is the 4.25" DAO little brother.

also what's the trigger pull on the 1046, it looks like the trigger is closer to the frame than on the other models and thus it might have a lighter double action pull than the traditional SA/DA 10mm's there.

and what happened in 1993 that made smith and wesson stop making the 10mm series, the introduction of the .40 SW and the FBI droping it?

As far as I know the grips were all marked...

The 1046 DAO trigger is slightly better than the SA/DA 1006 in DA...

S&W pushed their "new 40S&W" after the FBI's specs changed to the 10mm lite, without the contracts for the 10mm pistols, then S&W started devoting more effort to fill the 40S&W contracts...

The public perception of excessive force also changed the way things were looked at...

Another issue with 10mm pistols today is that, to shoot 10mm you need to reload, which means not a lot of 10mm ammo is produced or sold. When the gun manufacturers see the numbers on 10mm ammo production, which is almost non-existant, they don't see a reason to start making more 10mm pistols due to the low numbers.

Also, along the lines of shadow's last comment, people had a perception of 10mm being some overpowered, armor peircing, super round that kills just by looking at it, which, as much as I like 10mm it isn't those things.

So between S&W wanting to push 40 cal and a poor public perception, the 10XX series was doomed.
