I am after a nice target 22 and this site has led me to a SW 41, I found one used with a 5.5" barrel, 4 mags, looks 99% for $750.00 from a local dealer in VA, S# UBN 7312. If anyone could give me some feedback I would appreciate it. I have noted them on this site for $500-900, but I am not sure what year this is as I know from a few threads there were some problems at some point in the 90's. Not in a rush, so I would like to make sure of what I an buying.

Based on previous advice from this site I just picked up a model 58, 99%, took delivery last week for %500. Very happy with it and looking forward to some hand loading.

Thanks,
Jim

There's a gun shop near me selling brand new ones for $839.95.

At another local shop I see used ones from $799 to $899.95.

I got a real nice one made in 2004 which was used for $650 it took me about a month to find it in a small gun shop. I had to send mine back to S&W after having it 2 months to have some work done on it, they didn't charge me but I was a little surprised it happened.

Model 41's are a hard gun to buy used I think. The prices range all. If I had to do it all over again I would give some serious thought to a brand new one.

Sounds like I need to spend some time looking for a decent NIB deal at this point. There is a show coming up in VA I think next week. Any concerns with the newest line of model 41's to be aware of?

I gave 650.00 for mine produced in 68 or 69. Gun came with 3 mags, 5ish inch and 7ish inch with muzzle brake slides. The action on it is butter smooth and has the cocking indicator.

It sounds like alot of folks really favor the earlier built 41's, can anyone place this in context for me?

The older ones are a little nicer finished/polished, but functionally they are the same. The new ones are just as accurate.

My dad has an old one with the cocking indicator. Mine is newer (1989 vintage), it works just as well. The cocking indicator isn't a very useful feature IMHO, I wouldn't pass on a new 41 just because it doesn't have it.

I picked mine up used, four months ago while looking for a shotgun at my friendly neighborhood gun store. In the case was a 41 with Nils Target grips and 5 mags for $750. It had come in not two hours before. No brainer... DOB 1998.

I paid $600 for mine at a gun show and that included 2 original magazines and an owner's manual. I could have resold that gun a dozen times that weekend for a lot more then I paid for it!
