I have a Model 5904 above the model 5904 on left side of frame, it says TEH6899. Is that the serial number?? I ask because my gun also has a number in white 85025 on the front of the frame on the right side of the frame. Sure would like to know what those numbers mean.....Thanks..mulehide9

The TEH number is the serial number. Looking in SCSW (Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson) it would appear your pistol was manufactured in 1990. Hope this helps!!

Was this a former LEO gun? Sounds like an inventory number. Some of ours were stamped with inventory numbers for a period of time.

LEO = law enforcement officer.
If it was issued by a dept it could be an inventory number.

My dept issued 9mm S&W autos from 1968 until 2000 which included the 5904 from the early 1990s until we went to Glock 22/23. Many of those S&W autos can be found as LEO trade ins. The state of IL had a requirement that any item of state owned equipment had to have its own state inventory number. Didn't matter if the piece of equipment already had a serial number, it still required a separate state of IL inventory number which was never the same as the serial number. Even our squad cars had to have an inventory number/tag. That meant that our guns had not only a S&W serial number but also a state of IL inventory number stamped somwhere on the frame. The state mandated requirement was later dropped if the equipment had it's own unique serial number.

FWIW, I have a 4006 which was issued to Mesa, AZ PD. It has the City of Mesa crest imprinted on the RH side of the frame, and has a caution warning, as the magazine disconnect feature is not present. The serial number is in the usual place, and consists of the typical letters and numbers.

I purchased the piece from a Mesa cop; evidently, the Dep't. had decided to go to a different sidearm. imp
