I have a 1911 PD. Would like to carry this one - the balance is perfect. Also hate to see the beautiful finish degraded. What's been your experience with the dark finish on these pistols, do they wear well? I have holstered it just a few times and I swear I've seen some black thinning. Am I imagining it?

If you carry it then it will get wear. Either get another carry piece or grit your teeth and get used to it.

One of my Gunsites has the black melonite finish and was carried daily for about a year with very slight wear. Kydex holsters will abuse the finish more than leather also. IMO, a gun is a tool and the wear gives it some character.

What year did the Gunsite site model come with a melonite finish ? I've searched S&W catalogues back to 2006 and the only SW1911PD listed with a Melonite finish is the #108293. It would be nice to have a Commander size SW1911 with Melonite finish as a carry piece.

There is a PC 1911 with melonite, but the Gunsite PD has always had ordinary blue.
