I have a 4566 and was wondering if a 4516 slide will work on the 4566 frame, and did S&W ever make a full size frame on a compact slide.

I put the slide of my 4516-1 on my 4566 frame. It seemed to work ok but I don't think I will ever try to shoot it. I know better.

I have a slide off of a 4516-1 I can buy and was hoping it would fit my 4566, I really love the way the 4596 looks, I guess I'm trying to build me a poor man's version.

No it won't work but it might fit but will have issues on the first round the blow back will eject the slide into the shooter when the slide fails.

I have put many 45XX series slides on other 45XX frames with no problems.

The key is to match revisions, and not try to put pre TSW slides on TSW frames, and vice versa.

As an example, a 4516-3 slide will go on a 4566 3rd or 4th revision frame, and carries and shoots safely and accurately.

A 4516 no dash slide will not work on a 3rd or 4th revision frame, and vice versa. Regards 18DAI.

Smith & Wesson pistols are mass produced, they are not hand fitted parts. 4506 and 4566 use the exact same frame, the 4516 frame is the same other than the shorter grip. S&W didn't tool up to make the 4596, they simply put a 4516 slide on a full size frame.
