My neighbor has these nib w/ papers and wants to sell them, and I'm interested. 1st is a model 6450 w/ what looks like a 5 in barrel in s/s, looks similar to this
http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/Vie...Item=110810233

The other is a model 4516 w/ a 3.5 in barrel and looks just like the other. Anyone know anything about these? Value, Age,how much I should offer, good investment?

Thanks
John

I guess I was looking at the wrong model # on the box. Correct model #'s are 6450 and 4516

I don't know about the 6450, but a LNIB 4516 with box and docs, fetches between $475 to $550 locally. The higher retail going to the no dash, and -3. Hope this helps. Regards 18DAI.

The model 6450 is simply a 645, run a search on gunbroker for 645 and you'll get an idea of what they sell for. My guess, based on what I have observed is that used 645's in good to very good condition fetch about $450-$600 depending on what they come with and any signs of wear and tear. for example, the gun alone with no extra mags and some scratches and obvious barrel wear would most likely go for the $450 price, possibly a little less. with all of the "goodies" and in pristine, unfired condition $600-$650 wouldn't be unreasonable.

These guns sold in the 1986-88 timeframe and back then, new, they sold for around $650 OTD.

Ok, Thanks for the replies. $500 was kind of what we were thinking. They both have 2 mags, box, and original papers.

Thanks
John

Actually, the Model 6450 is different than a Model 645. It was a sort of half-step between the 645 and development of the Third Generation Model 4506. Mine is home in the safe but if memory serves, they are a 645 slide on a 4506 frame, or vice versa. The frame is marked "645" but the boxes are marked "6450."

To a collector of S&W autopistols, a new one in the box would probably be worth more than $500.

Buff there were a run of about 500 pistols that were essentially first run 4506's that were roll marked 645 on the frame. These guns were basically identical to the 4506 with the exception of the unique rollmark on the frame. I've never seen a 645 slide mounted on a 4506 frame to date, although I guess it's possible that such an animal exists considering all of the various version that Smith & wesson produced throughout those years.

I've seen at least 3 of these on gunbroker and the owners really think they have something special because all of them were asking in excess of $800 as a reserve. Now I'm not saying these aren't special but none of those guns sold so demand for them isn't that high it seems.

Yep, the gun displayed in that thread is one of the one's I was talking about above. Other than the rollmark it's a 4506 in every other way.
