I'm now looking for a OWB holster for my M&P9c. Is a thumb break type necessary for secure carry?

It's really a personal choice. A good holster will secure it just fine but a lot of people think thumb break is necessary for open carry in case someone tries to take it from them. I guess it depends on your definition of secure carry.

SECURE CARRY

a thumb break is not needed.

I have found (have to carry a level one retention per dept regus and leather usually means thumb break) the thumb break positions my hand slightly off from comfortable and have caught myself repositioning (its automatic) very slightly for a more comfortable grip.

make sure your holster has a form of retention that will not allow your holster to gravity fall out while upside down.

this is usually a screw with a squishable rubber spacer that will allow you to tweak the retention to your preference.

For concealed I much prefer something like a Comp Tac for your pistol. Adjust retention until it takes a sharp jerk to draw and it will not fall out even if you turn flips.
