Order a lighter hammer spring from Brownell's. That's what I did, and made a significant difference. Can't remember exactly what pound spring I went with, as it's been a little while. If it's a personal defense weapon you have to be a little careful about how light of a spring you go to though.

If you have one of the 4006 LE trade in's, there's a good possibility that it's one of the 4006CHP versions that do not have a trigger play spring on the drawbar. Those have an atrocious trigger pull, adding that spring is quite an improvement.

Otherwise, it's best just to send it off to someone that knows what to do with 3rd gen autos to slick them up.

Novak's is well known for S&W 3rd gen work. I bought a used 4516-1 that had been sent back, and it is unreal compared to my other stock 3rd gen pistols.

I'm not sure what you mean here. I was under the impression that the CHP's deletion of the play spring only factors in when the trigger is in single action mode and doesn't affect initial "pull feel" at all. But then again, I learn something new every day, so I could be way off.

If by "inital pull feel" you mean when you first start pulling the trigger rearward in DA mode, and the trigger has a funky feeling like it's loose and trying to engage or "fit into something"... that's the absence of the trigger play spring. I believe the CHP versions also only had a bobbed hammer so SA mode was not really possible, at least that's how mine was configured. Also, the 4006 doesn't exactly have to be a CHP version, it will do the samething if that spring is broken.

If that is what is happening in your case... here's a pic showing approximately how the drawbar and trigger are engaged with a play spring pushing on the back of the trigger, see how the pawls on the front of trigger are engaged in the notches on the draw bar? No slop.

Without the play spring, the trigger basically "floats' around and you can feel it "snap" into place with the drawbar as the trigger is pulled.

Well I appreciate that Conrad.

I bought it NIB so it wouldn't be a CHP
it just may be acting like a trade in lol.

There is no play in the trigger pull but
even in SA mode the pull is not very clean
and the break is also not very crisp.

I am a Perfectionist as I can tell most
of you all are as well.

Thank you so much for that Conrad I will
get ahold of Novak.

Eventually I want to get a Glock 20
and maybe get the grip reduced too.

Any of you have G20 experience?

You all are rather helpful
I appreciate being able to be here.

Best,

Marc

Methos just out of curiosity, what are you comparing your 4006s trigger pull to? If this is your first DA/SA trigger group than it will feel alittle heavy right out of the box. I bought my first S&W 3rd Gen, a 5906, back in 93 when I started my LEO career. After nearly 1k rounds at the academy it seemed fine to me. It was also the first and only semi-auto I had ever fired so I had nothing to compare it to. Now I'm forced to carry a Glock 22 and it's a completely different trigger feel, definately lighter for the first shot. I have since had a trigger job done on the 5906 and it made it smooth as glass and lighter also. If you haven't done so yet, I would say put 500-1k rounds through it before you send it off. You will develop the muscle memory for the stock trigger pull and then after a trigger job it will feel like a custom gun. Which in a way it will be. Just my two cents.

If you are at the range "ride the reset" . Let the trigger out just until it resets and pull press or release the trigger from the reset point. Works on my 3rd gen 5906 and 6906. Makes range time more enjoyable for me.

Those with a Glock know what I am trying to say.

In addition to the lighter hammer spring you can get a lighter draw bar plunger spring (trigger return spring) from Wolff to help with the double action pull.
Springs for SMITH & WESSON NUMBERED SERIES Semi-Auto Pistols

Trying these different weights can be rewarding but you will be taking the pistol apart a lot.

Methos,

I have 2/ea 4003TSWs (1 Rail w/ X300 and 1 without rail). I did the following and got a decent pull:

--Get some 2400 grit paper and GENTLY remove the burrs and rough spots from the sides of the drawbar
--Use the paper on the top sides of the trigger (where it contacts the inside of the trigger housing)
--Get some 17# mainsprings from Wolff (or Wilson Combat)
--Lube, Lube, Lube the contact surfaces with Frog Lube

I heard that the CHP had heavier springs in their guns to make them SAFER (whatever that means...). My two 4003s have a SMOOTH 9 lbs DA and approx. 4.5 lbs SA with little creep.

Hope this helps!!!
