Pete T. (aka Ted1Trading) has piqued my interest in the 5906M Modelo Militar. Although I am very fond of all things Smith and Wesson, I am primarily a military collector. There is very little info about the 5906M in the Standard Catalog, maybe you guys have some knowledge to share regarding this variant.

Are all 5906M's marked "Modelo Militar"?
Were they all made for export?
Were any ever used by the U.S. Military?
How hard are they to find?

Expanding on the 5906M, are there any other contemporary S&W semi-autos that were manufactured for or used by the U.S. Military?

Speedgunner:

All 5906 M are marked "Modelo Militar".

They were only made for export. However, due to cost, was not a big seller overseas. Had spring loaded decocker and had a melonite finish which added about $100 to the cost of a regular 5906.

None were used by the US Military.

They are very hard to find and they are worth more than the regular 5906's of that time. Most people do not know what they have or what they are looking at.

S&W competed in the trials for the 9mm but did not win.

Hope this helps.

No.

You would have to ask S&W, but I do not think so.

Not in any great quantity that has ever been reported.
How hard are they to find?

They are not easy to find.

The military used the so-called Hush Puppy in the Viet Nam era.

To add a couple of points...

1. The Modelo Militar has a lanyard ring, which is not shown in the picture above.

2. The gun is stamped "Model 5906" not 5906"M".

3. I was surprised to find that the Modelo Militar has the older stepped rails and not the newer box rails. I had thought that the Modelo Militar was a late version 5906 - just before the TSW line came out. So I had expected the box rails.

I picked mine up a couple weeks ago and am very pleased with it. Maybe I'll put up some pics this weekend.

Thanks guys for the info. I need one. I would love to find one without the "Modelo Militar" but that might be asking a bit too much. Pete, if you don't mind I would like to put myself on the lookout for one of these interesting variations, and ask the fellow forum members to give me a heads up if they see one for sale. I am anxious to see your pictures of your 5906M.

Speedgunner - I'll try to get some pics up this weekend. And as I travel around the country, I'll keep an eye for a 5906M for you.

Thanks Pete, I can't ask for any more than that. And thanks to everyone else who chimed in to help expand my education. Now to just find one...

Merry Christmas to all!

Here are some pics of the actual NIB Modelo Militar I recently snagged from a FL dealer thanks to a forum member who sent me the lead:
