I have a 3913 and a 4516 that I use for carry. Mainly stick with the 4516 but love the light 3913 some times. Want to get a CS 45 to mix it up now.

I have always preferred the aluminum frame full size guns for carry. The 4563, 5903/5904 and 4003 being my favorites.

IMO, the 4516 is too heavy for carry. Had you provided the 4513 as an alternative, I would have voted for that.

I voted for the 3913. In a year round, all weather, all modes of dress, I don't think there is a more suitable carry gun......in a semi auto.

I love my 4516-3, but consider it more of a compact duty 45.

I don't own a 4513, but after shooting my PC CQB 45, I don't think shooting a lighter more compact 45 would be much fun. Accuracy would probably decline as well, for me.

My 0.02 Regards 18DAI.

Back when S&W was having trouble a few years ago, I got the Performance Center to make me up a 4566 with light rail, decocker only (on slide), match barrel, tuned action, Novak Sights, lanyard loop and other enhancements, along with special serial number and Melonite finish. They provided the pistol in PC brief case with six magazines. I would have to select that as my pick for best Third Gen carry gun.

Trick question, right?

Like there's a 'bad' choice on your list.

Okay, I voted for the 3913. I'd have to offer it as my opinion of a "Best all-around" choice if I were pressed to decide.

I say this owning a 3913, CS9, 4013TSW, original 4513TSW, 4040PD and a CS45. (Just listing the metal-framed models.) Also, at one time or another I've carried an issued 5903, 6906, 4013TSW, 4566TSW & 4513TSW.

I really like the 6906. A lot. It's on my list of things to look for when I can find one sitting neglected in some out-of-the-way gun shop. Preferably a later production vintage.

The CS9 is handy. No doubt about it. I often choose to carry it over the 3913 when belt holster carry isn't used.

It's just that I happen to find the 3913 to be an ideal combination of design, size/dimensions, light weight & balance ... which taken together lend themselves to an inherently accurate, controllable and 'fast-handling' defensive handgun.

I carry a 4513TSW on-duty everyday at work, but I'd happily switch to carrying a 3913TSW if it were permitted.

I'd even be happy if we still issued 6906's.

Just my thoughts.

They all work fine and are all good quality pistols.

My vote is for my 3913 followed by my 6906 . Since WA is an open carry state , weight isn't much of an issue .

As long as its a 3d generation in good repair, the ultimate answer lies in your load-bearing ability.

Were I young and stout, I would carry a 4506 on each hip.

However, these days, a 3913 or 908 serves me very well.

Anything in between would be great!

For my money and what I do carry is a 4013 single stack.

Light compared to a 4506 and not much bigger than a 3913. Carries well in a Tauris holster.

And it is more than adequately accurate with a 155gr Gold Dot HP.

3913 for sure. I carry it quite often in a Crossbreed Supertuck. It fits into a nice niche between a 642 carried in the pocket, and a P220 carried under a coat or jacket. It's the perfect "shorts/jeans and a T-shirt" gun.

I'll probably snag a 3953 eventually for S***s & Giggles, and a 6906 for those times when I can get away with more than the 3913, but can't quite manage the P220 (i.e. untucked polo or button-down shirt).

I voted 3913 because I carry it in the cooler weather,
But,
I would have voted for the 4040PD because it's the same gun in .40 S&W

I own 3913, 6946, 4053, and 4516. I lean toward the 6946 with a 15 round mag, just because it fits my hand better,

None of the above.

The M&P compacts are by far S&W's best concealed handgun effort after the J frame.

And yes, I have and have shot enough 3rd gens to form an opinion of them.

Hmmmmmmmmmm, good question. I have a CS 45 that gets a lot of carry time. I have a 6904 that would once I get qualified. While I am not the biggest 9mm fan in the world, It tucks into the waistband very nicely, and with an extra magazine in my pocket I have 25 rounds available, that is an acceptable off duty carry. 6900 series gun probably tops the list then.

I have to disagree with Wyatt Earp 100% on that one. I tried, and don't care for, the M&P series. For concealed carry (and I carry a gun every day), I much prefer my 4516 or 3913 to the M&P. I believe both are excellent choices. I hope to have my new Shorty .45 in hand soon, so I'll see it it becomes my new CCW. I have a suspicion it will.

My Shorty 45 rocks. It has supreme accuracy,is easy to carry, has a slim profile and will feed anything. To me, it seeems the best combination of safety, firepower, handling and reliability. I think it's one of Smith's very best. The Performance Center did a good job on this one.

We all like different guns for many reasons. I am rather fond on this 4043 it works well for me. I have owned just about every 3rd gen pistol they made. And this 4043 is one of my favorite carry guns.

4013, the "sleeper" 3rd gen. What could be better than a 3913 sized piece in .40 caliber?!

Well, it's a bit larger, but not much. However, it is a hard hitting little guy. Because of the double recoil spring set, the recoil is about the same as a 3913 with a standard 124 gr. 9mm.

Yep, volume 2 of "SC of S&Ws" says 27 ounces for the 4013, and 25 oz. for the 3913.

My "duty" weapon in Class A uniform was the 4043.
Heavy to keep it on target.
Superb accuracy along with 100% functioning.
Today, it serves as the "at the ready" by my recliner.
With the "crimson trace" red dot, night targeting an intruder is elementary easy!!
I remember explicitly, a targeted perp "trying his best" to wipe off that red dot,, off of his chest.
Funny today, as I remember it.

I've got a 3913 and I'll be darned if I can find anything that, weighing all the compromises, works better as a carry pistol. I am alone, it seems, but I really like a pistol with a safety.

And I just bought a 6906, so I'll see how that works in the future!

I voted for the 3913, I love mine; but I have to say I carry a 4013tsw a good part of the time as well.

Of the choices 3913 but in reality I'd go for the 3953 first.

I voted other for my 3906. I've been carrying this lately and it carries as easy as my Commander. This is my smallest Smith pistol till my 3913LS arrives which should make for an easier summer carry.
The weight of the 3906 is no bother at all, comforting.

For me, I prefer a DAO, so the correct answer for me is my 3953.

I really liked the 3913 back before I got "Glocked". I was also fond of the 4516 and the 669/6906. Once my department went to Glock 21s, my off-duty and plain-clothes gun was a Glock 19, altho I wasn't really sold on 9mm in those days.

I carry my 6906 more, but the 3913 is almost always "carryable".
