Picked up one of the trade in 5946s from Bud's last week. Turns out that another party had one shipped to the same FFL so I got to see them both. The other one (of course) was basically flawless, mine had a little holster wear nothing serious, but I decided to polish it. How much can you hurt a $270 piece? Anyhow, here are a couple of pictures. Fortunately I polish better than I photograph, but you get the idea. Still needs more detailing tho'.

WOW! Never seen a SS auto that shinny. Did you use Mothers?? Nice looking 5946!! Put some wood Houges on it and you got a BBQ gun!

I judiciously used 1200 Silicon carbide paper, and Better Built Truck Box Polish. There are still some areas where the original bead blasting surface is visible in very bright light, but that gives me something to work on. It takes a long time and if you want to raintain sharp edges you have to use a firm block under the paper or polish most of the time.

That looks great, but it's more work than I want to put into it! I did that once using an LEO trade-in 4" 686. The shop asked me to do the rest of them. I said that they couldn't afford it after all that work!

I have a trade-in 5946 with a square trigger guard. I'm going to polish the hammer, trigger, exposed portion of the barrel, plug where the safety would be on a TDA, extractor ends of the pins, ect, and bead blast the frame and slide. I think the contrast will look good. If I ever get around to doing it, along with all the other projects I have in the works, I'll post pics.

That's a wild looking 5946...I like it. The M&P looks nice too, maybe it's the lighting in the pic but it has a black chrome look to it.

The melonite finish has been removed on the M&Pc with mother's mag polish also.
