Yeah, I saw this one. I am a bit skeptical with all the demands of the seller. Don't ask this, don't ask that, no 3 day inspection period and sketchy photos. If it is an FBI model, where is the warning on the slide? Why cannot we see better pics of the letter? Too many unsnswered questions for me.

Yep, I too want an FBI someday, ahh, someday. I am not bashing the seller, don't know them. It just seems to me that IF it were a true FBI gun, I would want to show as much proof as possible in order to increase the bids. If I could see the letter, gun serial # and better pics of the gun, I could feel better about placing a bid. I wish the winning bidder the best of luck with the history of the gun.

Wish I could find one of these, but Kalifornia put a big roadblock in my way. Since the 1076 is not on the "approved list" an FFL can't sell one to anyone but an LEO. I can still do a private party transfer, but I can't find anyone local that wants to sell one. Kicking myself for not buying one years ago when I used to see them in gun stores. I sure hope we can strike down that ****** law one of these days.

Keep looking there are FBI models in Kalifornia. I have one and found a second in So Kal. I am trying to get him to sell it to me...

I'd settle for any 1076 at this point. I find them very appealing. Always liked the ballistics of the 10mm but I bought a .40 Glock instead back in the '90's. I have 3 S&W revolvers but no autos. My ex-wife got the fourth - a sweet Model 19 surplus from the Birmingham PD that I bought in Georgia back in '91 for about $200. Wish I still had that one. I think the 10mm is easily the equal of the .357 magnum, which is my first love.

I take it then that these boxes area as rare as hens teeth?

As far as the cardboard boxes, is there anything special about them? I have seen some of the ends of the boxes, but to the tops say anything other than "Pistol" - I have seen boxes over the years that will say "semi auto" or "center fire".

Also, which magazines are correct for these guns, the yellow followers or the white? I have seen both.

Both are correct. Just different time periods. I have mags with both.. white ones are newer.

I want to thank Dave for all of his help, I have been looking for three years for an FBI 1076 and finally pulled the trigger (no pun intended).

I have TFP23XX. I has a checkered front strap and the "caution" message on the slide. It has no box and only one mag. I know the only way to be sure is to get the letter but I'm curious as to what the odds are this is the real deal before I call S&W for the letter later in the week.

I was going to sell this and then you guys got me all excited. I don't think I have ever shot it. As soon as I can walk again I'll be taking it outside and making some noise with it.





I also have a 1006 that I have shot quite a bit.

This has the "Fires without magazine" thing and I think checkered in front of the grip, but it looks just like my 1006.

It's number is TFE 56xx

I think S&W should start production again. Ive seen and owned alot of semi auto pistols and I still think they got the upper hand on it.
I have a Glock 10mm and it wont come close to shooting as accurately as my smiths will.
They should of brought back the semi auto rather than the 610 version of the 10mm.

Here is information on the FBI 1076 that the pistols'fans may find interesting.

• the FBI 1076 was reportedly based on the Model 4506 but all three contract test pistols submitted to the FBI in 1989 were clearly marked/stamped 1006s and were modified to contract specifications
• one of the test pistols had a 3 ½ barrel
• the FBI took delivery of only approximately 3,500 1076s; approximately 1,000 were returned to S&W under warranty. These 1,000 pistols were later shipped out by S&W as used guns to distributers and are the ones on the market today
• the FBI, and other law enforcement agencies, contracted for 1076s with no magazine disconnect safety
• FBI 1076s may have grooves or checkering on the fore-grip
• FBI 1076s may have no caution statement or the law enforcement caution statement. There is no documented FBI 1076 with the civilian caution statement
• the FBI 1076 test pistols did not all have serial numbers beginning with “TEU.” It does not stand for “Test Evaluation Unit”
• the FBI 1076 serial number prefixes include TEU, TEV,TFE, TFF, TFH, TFK, TFL, TFN, TFP, TFX, THB, and THC
• the FBI 1076 never requested a “special trigger group.” It is not in the contract. It is a myth that the FB1076 has a special trigger. The confusion may be a result of engineering changes required to install the de-cocker
• the FBI did request that the contract pistol be equipped with a SigSauer type frame mounted de-cocker
• the FBI 1076 was included in the 10/91 frame-mounted de-cocking lever recall
• the 2,500 1076s ultimately accepted by the FBI were hand assembled in the Performance Center using only the best parts available
• the belief that these Performance Center pistols had $2,500 - $4,500 worth of gunsmithing done is a myth
• it is believed that nearly all of the 2,500 pistols were destroyed by the FBI. The remaining FBI 1076s in the possession of the FBI are essentially demonstration pistols only
• A few very senior Special Agents that are on the job are still carrying their 1076s. When they retire their pistols will be destroyed as surplus property

Just read your mesage on the 1076. I am in Baton Rouge and thinking of selling mine. I got it while with the sheriff's office here in BR. When the office switched out, after the FBI did, we were able to buy them.

This is one of the law enforcement models. I just don't have any idea how much it is worth. I carried it on duty for a couple of years so it is a bit worn in that regard. Still shoots like a champ though.

I have a beat on another 1076. After the last one I purchased on Gunbroker I was a little bummed out to learn that it was NOT an FBI model even though everything seemed to bepointing that direction. Either way, this one has been said to have a serial number "TEU03XX." Needless to say , I am super stoked to get this gun in my hot little hands. I will post a report when I have the gun and I will be surely sending a letter off to Mr. Jinks. So from earlier posts it seems that the first 250 sent to the FBI academy were merely for training but not carried by agents on duty. Is that correct DMC?

Just picked up another 1076 from a gentleman from Idaho Falls. He had it posted on a local news website's classifieds. It had been on there for a few days before I noticed it. I am surprised no one snatched it up. I called him to ask what the serial number was and he told me TEU03XX. I got a little excited because I have yet to see this prefix not come back as an FBI model. So anyway, picked it up today for $550. It's in good shape, but doesn't have the original grips. I am okay with that. Anyway, I will send in the letter and see what I got. I will keep anyone who cares posted. Pics below, and no the number is not 03, I have just blurred out the whole serial number.

Also, the only difference in the guns is the small mark on the front of the trigger guard, it looks like a "T." It is not present on my non-FBI model which is the top of the pair. Thought that was interesting.

You definately may have found the real deal as this FBI documented example also has the small T on the trigger guard and it is in the same serial number range as yours. I'd get a letter on that one for sure.

Chuck, thanks for the info. Any idea what that upside T means? Have you noticed if you have the two punches under the decocking lever. My gun does not have that so I wonder if there is recall work that it needs or if that was after the recall. So where did Roy say your gun started out? Sorry, lots of questions. Anyway, the letter will be in the mail tomorrow. Thanks.

Midway USA has the palmswell grips. I hope this on turns out to be an FBI.

If not, then I am not sure what I have done to deserve the bad luck. But either way, like before I am happy to have the pistol. They are the best to shoot and well worth the investment.

Does anyone know what the upsidedown T stands for? I have a 1066 with it on the triggerguard and now I see they are showing up on the 1076s.

I just scored a 1076 on an auction site. When I receive the pistol, I will be contacting Mr. Jinks and send him 50 bucks to confirm one way or the other if mine is an FBI model. (the serial number indicates it is an FBI model )

Chuck, I believe I sold you TEU0327 several years ago. IIRC, none of the FBI 1076's had the punch marks under the decock lever, I know the two that I kept do not have the punch marks.

DMC, have you heard of any confirmed FBI's with the punch marks. Although I wonder if that isn't consistent with FBI 1076's that went to the academy and the ones that were actually carried by field agents.

I have several FBI 1076s with recall punch marks. Keep in mind that any subsequent owner of the pistol could have sent it in for the recall inspection. The inverted T is indeed a mystery. Many, but not all, of my FBI pistols have it. There are several other letters and numbers stamped on the pistol. I believe at least one of them identifies the gunsmith assembling the pistol. I haven't found anyone that can decipher the various markings on the pistol. Even the inverted T is in question. In many cases it appears to be the number 1. Note also that your barrel has one, if not two, letters stamped on it. The most common is an O.

Gunbroker and I think the three letter prefix falls into the FBI issue guns.

I just looked at both of my 1076's, both lettered as FBI guns, they both have the inverted T.

My 1076 has 2 T's by the magazine opening (TFP21XX). Does anyone else have the T's in this location?

Anybody see the 1076 that sold on Gunbroker today for $780. It was serial number TEU0048. I would have loved to have the extra cash for that one. I would imagine this was likely part of that first delivery to Quantico. Only thing better is having a serial number with 000X.

Oh, and it also had the upside "T" on the trigger guard.

Got my letter today for 1076 with serial number TEU0308. I had also asked Mr. Jinks about the number "1" on the front of the trigger which he responded to in the last sentence. Anyway, finally got one that is confirmed so I am happy.
Anyway, I will try to post some pictures of the gun as well. In the next post if I can figure out a way to minimize them to fit as an attachment.
