I would also be interested in getting rid of the mag safety on my 4506-1. It causes a problem when I use it for IDPA. The SOs don't like me using the safety lever to drop the hammer. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

It requires you to remove the rear sight and remove the left nylon plunger and spring under it. Leave the steel one on right in there, it's your firing pin safety.

When I removed the fix sight on my 5926 I used scotch tape to put a cheat mark on the top of the slide and the rear of the sight so I could match them up after I took out the small plunger. Took less than five minutes.

Good luck..

WSTEPS...for IDPA/USPSA matches just carry an empty mag for the "slide forward hammer down commands" no way the RO can harass you on that. When I use any gun that has a mag disconnect I make sure that I have an empty just for that purpose.

It is also against IDPA rules to modify or remove a saftey device. Are you going to get caught probably not.But if you are caught at a major match you could be disqualified.

I sometimes shoot a 5946 in USPSA, and would recommend vividly marking your hammer down magazine. The last thing you want to do is mix a load mag up, even if it can't chamber a round. It will put the SO at ease, because they don't see many of these guns anymore.

I'm not familiar with the IDPA rules but it seems bass ackwards to put a mag back into a pistol or disable the safety in order to drop the hammer by pulling the trigger instead of making the pistol safe the way it was designed to.

What do the guys with guns like an M&P w/mag disconnect do?

The thing is that not all Third Generation guns had the mag safety installed to begin with, some LE departments ordered them without. From a safety standpoint on the range I'd just as soon see the hammer drop without a mag in the gun mtself. On the M&Ps' with no exposed hammer or striker it's hard to tell if the striker drops or not. Show a empty gun, point downrange and pull the trigger, holster a safe gun. Outside of S&W and Browning Hi-Powers not many guns offer the mag safety, that does pose a problem in the gun games. But you can see the point that by just using the safety lever to drop the hammer there could still be a round in the chamber, by dry firing you can be asured of it. The general rule is to show and insert a empty mag and then snap the trigger, it just a extra step that you'll have do if your gun has the mag safety.
