I actually was going to exclude Performance Center items. There's no doubt the 952 is awesome.

Standard production, probably my 908 - it does much better than I would expect with Winchester 147 gr JHPs.

My 915. Never jammed or misfed anything I've fed it, and it's so accuarate it's almost boring to shoot.

Dead even tie between my 3913 and my 39-2. They just keep going and going....as stated earlier almost boring. A friend of mine in Idaho has a 952 that is incredible. It's favorite ammo is CCI Blazer. It simply carves the X ring to pieces all day long!

You guys are making this easy! I've caught the bug for SW autos...they've got everything I'm looking for: reliable, durable, comfortable (single stack), and classic lines. For my first SW 9mm I was looking hard at the 3913 as I've read nothing but great things, and am willing to bite the bullet and buy NIB (as every used model I've come across is roughed up a bit, but wanted to see how many people were pleased with accuracy.

I REALLY want to pick up a 3906 as well, but am having a hard time finding a quality one for a good price.

Also want a 915 (but have to hold it first to judge the double stack grip) and a 457 or 4516.

My 3913 as well. Only S&W 9mm I have now. I have had two 5906 and loved them. If I find a nice 6906 or 3906 or even a 5903 I would get one more for sure. I just got a Sig P6 and it is a godd gun but doesn't shoot as well as my 3913

I have had my 6904 for only a few weeks, I am not driving tacks with it yet but some very nice groups are coming together... I'm just starting to become comfortable with it.

My 5946 and 3914 are both boringly accurate. I like shooting the 5946 more because of its larger grip, but the 3914 is a much better carry gun.

3913 for myself, also. Tremendous 'reverse snob appeal' at matches. It enabled my to put a few trophies on the shelf and ribbons on the wall - I like the kind that say 'first' the best...

S&W Model 639, the most accurate pistol I've owned in any caliber. I have a Sigma 9VE which is a fire for effect handgun, that is, atleast one of the 17 rounds should hit a target at 50, if not it should get the BG's head down so I can run.

My first 9mm was a SW 659. I 'upgraded' to 3913 so my wife could have a carry gun - turns out she never carries so I plan to carry it myself, when my CPL permit finally comes in (hopefully before the end of January). It's got everything like a LadySmith but doesn't say LadySmith on the slide, so I can still feel like a man carrying it!

Anyway I noticed that it seems to print to the left and down from where I aim - it's quite possibly (even probably) 'operator' error, as I'm certainly no expert. The sights are not adjustable, as far as I can tell. Has anyone else had this problem and is there anything I can do to correct it (other than practice, if it's really my own fault?)??

Okay, my 3913NL is a fine shooting machine for a relatively short-barreled short sight radius 9mm. But is isn't as accurate as my Walther PPS. Sorry. I wish it wasn't true. Frankly, my Beretta 90-two is pretty accurate also, a bit for massive for everyday carry though.

The 3913NL is one fine piece of S&W work. Everything you hear about them is true. If you can't find one, and need to get a gun now...get one, but don't stop looking for a good 3913...you won't regret it.

I love all the talk about bullet-jump affecting accuracy, when my S&W 686+ relolver will outshoot them all. Talk about bullet-jump!

To see if it's your form affecting POI vs. POA, use a rest and squeeeeeze the trigger. 10 shots minimum. Don't fall for that 3 shot group or 5 shot group ****. Then at the same distance try it with a two hand hold. Again...squeeeeeze the trigger. This should give you a good idea if the sights need to be shifted. Even taking your time with the two hand hold, if you have a fault, it will show compared to the rested shots.

639, all the way. I have 2 Sigmas that are fire for effect weapons, the 639 has never let me down regardless of the ammo.

FWIW:

When I want absolute accuracy I go to my S&W/HK P7.

As a family photo below shows, the adopted HK P7 was never told it isn't really a "Smith n' Wesson", but I'm afraid as it gets older and realizes the difference in it's color as compared to it's siblings it's gonna' start asking questions..

My wife and I just treat it like any of our other S&W firearm "children" and it's just one of the family, so to speak...

My all time favorite 9MM, you can't beat it with a stick. 639, a stainless gem.

My best non PC, non Barsto, is my 5926, it's the tightest 59xx series I've seen, and shoots good enough to do 597 indoor PPC. It shot 147 hornady hp's very well at 50 yds also

Oh, gee, I don't know. Maybe my 6906, 5903, 915 or my new 3913TSW pre-rail. What do you think? Actually, if I do my part, all my S&W 9mm 3rd generation pistols shoot great. Now cut me a break here, these 57 year old, bifocal wearing, glaucoma suffering eyes ain't what they use to be. Now, if I had those 18 year old eyes I had in basic training, I could really tighten those groups up.

If we are excluding Performance Center guns, my vote would be for the 639 (it's my only other S&W 9mmm)



The original barrel bushing was pretty loose, but a replacement bushing from S&W tighted things up. It's acually a pretty good shooter.

I'm a big fan of the 3rd gen Smith pistol, but I've got to admit I've never had one that was a "tack driver"..

I have 3 HK P7's that are "tack drivers", and I had a Walther P99c/AS that was pretty close, but none of my 3gS's are that accurate.

Having said that, the difference between the accuracy of my P7's vs the 3gS's is that at self defense range (the only distance this old fart shoots from anymore) the HK's (if I do my part) will constantly shoot very small groups in the X ring.. My 3gS's will shoot larger groups, still in the X ring.

So, for personal defense concerns ALL of my 3gS's will do the job, but for casual target plinking and a search for the smallest group, the HK P7 is factually more accurate..

MY primary concern in a self defense weapon is reliability.. I consider 3gS's as reliable as a firearm can be..

I plink with my HK's, I carry my CS9, what does that tell you?

I've owned firearms for over 50 years and I have been a reasonably good marksman in times past, and a fairly good marksman now.. But I'm not a liar, and if you think the average 3rd generation Smith pistol is the equal in inherent accuracy to the HK P7 then I respectfully suggest you have never fired the HK P7.

I mentioned that the difference between the 3gS pistols and the more accurate P7's, or P99c/AS was in the diameter of the group WITHIN the X ring. I DID NOT say the 3rd gen Smiths were inaccurate, only less accurate than some of the competition. And that difference was minute enough to be of absolutely no consequence when fired for personal self defense at self defense range.

I suggest the increased blood pressure, adrenalin rush and other factors associated with a confrontation involving firearms would make the difference in "tack driving" accuracy and "reasonable accuracy" a moot point. In such circumstances RELIABILITY is much more important than pin-point accuracy, and in RELIABILITY the fine 3rd generation pisol is 2nd to none.

So, I carry a 3gS because I have complete faith in it's inherent RELIABILITY, very good accuracy, and I prefer the TDA trigger over that of the competition.

So, the answer is YES I do favor the 3rd gen Smith pistol for personal defense even though I do not chose to use it when I'm at the range trying to shoot the tightest groups.

You're respectfully correct, Jeese, I've never fired a HK P7. Shot darn near everything else. The most accurate handgun I've ever owned in 49 years is a S&W M639. I understand what you are saying. I own 2 Sigmas and like them. I would not, however, use either if I were shooting for money.

The photo below is of the first 8 rounds fired through my first HK P7. I had never fired a "squeezecocker" before, and I only shot from 7 yards, standing, two hands (and actually braced on my wife's golf cart frame for stability). I was only shooting to determine poi/poa to see what adjustments to windage/elevation would be necessary.

I was pretty amazed when the first round impacted in the X ring, as I'm a senior citizen with declining vision, and less than steady hands. I'm just an average marksman too.. I was more amazed when all of the other rounds also impacted in the X ring..


I've shot a lot of guns, and none have ever been more inherently accurate than my HK P7. I was so impressed shortly thereafter I bought two more "A" grade (CDNN) HK P7's, and both shot just as accurately as the first.

As you can see from the photo if I wanted to improve the grouping I could just drift the rear sight slightly to the right, and I think the size of the group would tighten up, but I just left the sucker alone. (I'm a "lefty" by the way.)

FWIW I was shooting the cheap Winchester White Box Value pack rounds which are NOT necessarily the most accurate 9mm's in the world. I've found my 115gn "DoubleTap" jhps are consistently more accurate, but I can't afford to just plink, or target shoot, with those suckers, too costly..

The first thing I do when I buy a new pistol is take it out back to my "range" and shoot it from 7 yards in the same manner as I did the P7's.. The accuracy of the P7 is the standard by which I measure each new firearm, and while I always HOPE for fantastic accuracy in a new pistol, I've yet to find one better than the Lower Saxony Police (surplus) P7's I got from CDNN.

My 3913 didn't do it.. My 3913LS didn't do it. My 5906 didn't do it.. My 6906 didn't do it, nor did my CS9.

So, I'm thinking while the 3gSmiths are wonderful firearms, fantastic accuracy right out of the box is not necessarily guaranteed.. Or the 5 I have didn't have it.

All were certainly accurate enough, that's why I keep buying 'em, and in fact hope shortly to have a CS45.
