I looking to buy some more Federal tactical HST hollowpoints, and noticed they carry both the regular flavor and +P. Should I consider the +P in 230 grain for my 4516, or will i experience any adverse effects like excessive recoil or frame battering? thanks for any input!

I'm not a .45 person but why would you need +P in a .45? I bet if you check out the ballistics it will be 50 fps or less. That 3rd gen tank should handle it ok but it will still accelerate the wear if you shoot it a lot. Just my .02

I'd put in an extra-power Wolff recoil spring and go for it!

The small additional pressure you are going to get with a 45 APC+P is going to be minimal-unlike the additional pressures you can get with some other calibers.
The 4516 is an very heavily built gun-unlike the 4513 with its alloy frame.
I suspect you could not buy enough +P ammo to wear out a 4516, or if you could, you would wear out shooting it before the gun does.

I have shot a fair amount of the Federal .45 ACP 230 grain HST Plus-P loading; it is the issue round at work. I can't tell any difference between it and standard pressure, even when fired side-by-side. The steel frame of the M-4516 is pretty strong. I wouldn't worry about it.
The short barrel of the 4516 cuts down velocity from the standard gun's 5-inch barrel. The Plus-P loading gets some of that back, which will help expansion. Good idea with no drawbacks I can see.

Can't tell the difference between +P and standard? Wow, I can tell it and I'm only using the 185gr +P! Even my buddy behind me could tell, he told me he could feel it & that was after 100 rnds of his own 45.

I also shot lots of Federal HST +P in 230 grain through my 4566. It was our duty round after the Department dropped the Black Talon round. In any case, I saw no ill effects in my pistol over the 10 years I carried and shot the pistol.
I also felt little difference in firing generic 230 grain FMJ practice ammon (non +P) and the +P 230 grain HST. Perhaps it was due to the all steel construction of the 4566, but the recoil difference felt minor, and perhaps even imaginary, to me.

I just shot CCI 230 grain ball ammo and then Hornady TAP +P directly behind it. I could not tell any difference whatsoever. I have a 4586, but I expect the results would be the same in the 4516. Why +P? Why not?

Just don't try Remingtons 185grn +P+, wow. That is the hottest factory
.45 I've ever shot. One mag full in my 4513 was enough. That stuff only goes in full size guns now.

With a heavier recoil spring, I have no doubt that a 4516 will handle 45+P.
Will one of you proponents of 45+P explain why you feel it is needed? Seriously, I'm curious.
IMHO there is little gain, and it DOES negatively impact the service life of the pistol, so what benefit is there? Thanks! Regards 18DAI.

The 4516 which has a 3 3/4" barrel will pick up some of the velocity it loses from the shorter barrel by the use of +P ammo. That's why I use +P in not only .45acp, but also in .38 special and 9mm. If +P isn't your cup of tea, take a look at Douple Tap Ammo. They attain +P velocity, w/o the ammo being loaded to +P pressures.
FWIW, Corbon 230 gr JHP +P averaged 1,017 fps from my Colt 1911 XSE 5". That's pretty darn good for a 230 grain bullet!!

Perhaps I am just not sensitive (that’s what my wife says), but I did no see much difference between +p and reg in my 4516 in 230gr, perhaps a bit more in 200gr, never shot 180.
I have sold the 4516 and now have a 4566, very little difference there in the 200gr between +p & reg. as I see it. I know that the third gen S&W is a tank; probably it’s only short coming. I have shot many 10mm rounds in them with wear only to my hands.
As to which is best, I do not know.
