The standard 5946 came with a magazine disconnect safety.

Our dept spec'd the 5946 with the disconnect removed, They wanted us to be able to get off that last shot. Each gun bears the "CAUTION" notice on the slide. If you didn't get the gun from our equipment section, it could only be sold to you (officer) by a Smith & Wesson Distributor, NOT a dealer. I got my gun that way, as our equipt section didn't have em in stock yet and the distributor did. Smith felt there was a liability issue, so they would only let the distributor sell the gun, not a dealer.

Although heavy, the 5946 is one hell of a pistol. Super reliable, it will last a life time. My gun was worked and has a very smooth, lite dbl action trigger.

I carried a 5946 for years as a duty gun until we finally switched to Glock's. I miss my Smith, fortunately I was able to buy it for 200.00 when we transitioned and since I was issued it NIB, it was like getting a new gun for 200.00. I still wish I could carry it!

The NYPD 5946s don't have a magazine disconnect, but I seriously doubt it's an NYPD specific model. Besides not having a magazine disconnect I don't think there is anything different about our 5946s.

MTS, Other than the disconnect issue, all 5946 are (as you stated) the same. Smith only removes the disconnect feature on LE guns, ours being one of the agency's that have...or don't have the feature.

If you went into a dealer (not distributor) and wanted the gun, they would sell you one that has the feature, cannot be fired (last round) if the Mag is removed.

Hey, I know our job and some others still use the gun and Smith still makes it for us/them, but is it still a cataloged item?
