Default Shooting .40 in a 1066

I have a 1066 coming in next week. Is it possible to just drop in a .40 barrel into the gun to shoot that caliber? Does the magazine have to be changed? Any help from someone who has tried this is appreciated.

Most people I know advise not to do this as only the extractor is holding the round when the firing pin hits the primer and it's hard on the extractor. Don't know if anyone has blown their pistols up that I have heard of, but it is hard on the extractor.

Midway sells factory .40 barrels for the 1066, anyone try just dropping in a different barrel? I can do the same on my Sigs switching between .40 and .357

If Midway has the barrels then that is the way to go. BarSto made a few years ago, but I have not seen any for 3rd gen S&Ws' for a long time. You would probably need a 1# or 2# lighter recoil spring, factory mags will usually work.

Default .40 barrel for the 1066

I've been looking for a .40 barrel for my 1066 for some time. Others I have spoken with were not aware that S&W had such a conversion barrel. When I saw this post, I went to the Midway website and found that they do list a common barrel for the 1066 and .40 caliber pistols in .40; guess I'll just get one and see.

I would double check that listing at Midway. They list the barrel under the 1066, which of course is 10mm, and say that it also fits a 4003 and 4004. Dont think I'd like to try that! LOL!

I know for a fact that a barrel from a .40 cal 3rd generation wont fit my 1086. I tried....

I dont think any one currently makes a 40 cal barrel for the 10mms. Barsto used to. I've been trying to locate one for a long time with no luck.......

I don't believe S&W made a conversion barrel for the 10mm 10XX series pistols for the .40; I asked several years ago and was told "no". I think the only afermarket barrel maker that did make a conversion barrel was Barsto, and maybe Jarvis.

Default Smith & Wesson .40 will not fit in 1066, 1076, 1086

I just checked a 1066, 1076 and 1086,
The .40 Smith & Wesson barrel has a smaller hood than the 1066, 1076, 1086.
Also the .40 barrels are a little shorter.
I did not field strip any of them, but the visual says no.
If there is a way to get a .40 Smith & Wesson barrel to fit, please let me know.
I would love to get a couple/few.
All my numbers say it isn't going to happen.
Regards,
BM1

Thanks for the information, guys. I was afraid it was too good to be true. I was skeptical before I saw it on the Midway site. I placed an order for a 4003/4006 barrel for my 1066, but just cancelled it a few minutes ago.

ill tell you what i tried awhile back. i made a sleeve, and i forgot the dimensions, to press into my extra 10mm barrel. it was the difference between a 10mm and .40 cartridge. a lite press fit into the chamber and was able to fire .40's outta my 10mm barrel no problem. I'll see if i cant find the link to it.......

Here it is! 1086 barrel

I called S&W today, they had spoken to Midway and confirmed that the barrel on the website should not list the 1066, it was a mistake. Sorry to get everyone excited.

I simply load 10mm in three power levels, the lowest approximating .40 S&W. It would be nice to be able to use cheap, plentiful .40 brass. I had given some thought to the same proceedure. Maybe someone in the gunsmithing or machine shop business could offer this service or converted barrels. There probably aren't that many service barrels still in existance. Are the 10XX barrels fitted at all. or are they manufactured as "drop in" parts?

Does S&W still make 10mm barrels? If something happens to the barrel for my 1006, they should be able to sell a replacement, correct?

I would see if you could buy one that was not reamed yet... and then have someone ream it out for the .40. Pay the same price for the standard barrel, but just have them skip one step.

Or am I grasping at straws?

I know folks have approached Bar-Sto about re-making the .40 conversion barrel and received "no" for an answer; but, has anyone asked S&W? It seems it would be very easy for them to do it.
