Default slide release lever Walther P-22 - can not pull down

Why is it that I just can not seem to pull the slide release lever/plastic button (located under the front part of the slide) down on my Walther P-22 by just placing my fingers on each side of it and pulling straight downward.

What I have to wind up doing is to take the thin edge of the nail filer blade on my pocket/pin knife and insert it between the bottom of the slide and the top of the release lever and rotated the nail file blade so that the release lever starts downward. Once it is started downward on both side, I can then pull it down with my fingers.

Am I doing something wrong ? Or is this a design flaw on this gun ?

I am afraid that if I keep on having to use the above describe procedure, I am going to wind up scratching the slide and frame of the pistol.

Thanks.

ummm, I have a buddy with a P22 can you disengage the slide stop just by pulling back the slide a little farther? if not I suggest sending it back on warranty

Can you e-mail my question to your buddy and see if he can relate to my question ?

P.S. - If I am interpreting the owner's manual instructions correctly, the pulling down/dropping of this release lever is done BEFORE the slide is moved backward, i.e. the release lever mechanism on this gun does not work like those on a 1911 styled pistol.

Thanks.

wpshooter - Are you talking about the takedown lever, or the slide stop lever? Here is a diagram.

It sounds to me like you are talking about the takedown lever, not the slide stop/release. Give us some more info, please.

actually it does seem like you are reffering to the takedown, a couple of pics of your problem would help greatly

ive got a p22 and a sw99 and a p99as all 3 are basicly the same design, I pull the slide back about 1/8 inch and the takedown lever moves more freely.

that's exactly what I was thinking and if I pull the slide back I can drop the slide stop the same way on my SW99

My take down lever's a pain in the neck, too. It's getting easier with time but I have to use a make shift tool for now.

Yes, that is what I was referring to, they are labeling it as takedown lever.

And, yes if I either draw the slide all the way back and let it rest on the magazine catch lever or if I pull back the slide by just a minimal amount by grasping the black ambi-safety levers, then I can use one finger/thumb nail to start each side downward. Still can not pull it down with my fingers.

What this tells me is that apparently there is pressure being placed on the back takedown lever by some of the internals of the slide by the spring tension of the slide spring. You would think they might mention this in the owner's manual in the instructions for disassembling the pistol. Perhaps they are assuming that we are all experts of the design elements of the gun. I sure am not.

Thanks for all of your assistances on that problem.

Now for another question.

I am now in the market for a good 9mm personal protection pistol.

One of the MAIN requirements for the gun that I want is for it to have a good trigger, i.e. one that has little to no travel to it and does not have an overly strong trigger pull.

The guns that I have shot in the past have been mostly 1911 single action guns with very good triggers.

However, I would also like for the gun to have a polymer/rubber type grip as opposed to the metal frame/grips of the 1911 guns.

Although it is not up to the standard of the triggers on the 1911 guns, I like the trigger on my Walther P-22, in that, it does not have a great deal of travel and the trigger pull is not too bad but could be better.

So to my question. On the Walther P-99 9mm pistols, are any of those single action guns and are the triggers on them similar to the trigger on my P-22, in that, the P-99 would not have a great deal of travel on the trigger and have a fairly light trigger pull/release ???

In short, I am trying to decide between the Walther P-99 or a 1911 styled pistol.

Thanks.

Default P22 takedown

I had the same problem too. If you grab the takedown between your thumb and fingers, it pinches and will not come down. No tool is necessary. Put the tips of your fingers (both hands) at the top of the takedown and push gently down. Do not put any inward pressure or it won't budge.

Is the sw99 the same gun as the Walther P-99 ?

And if not, which is the preferred choice and why ?

Thanks.

virtually the same, the frame is still made in gemany at a walther plant, the slide is S&W and so is the barrel, the main difference that I see is that the feed ramp on the sw99 seems to be more promenet making it a lot harder to jam, although the wathers were very reliable as well, but the sw99 is no longer in prodution so i see them eventually becoming worth a lot morebut heck if I trust my life to it it is a very good gun, plus mine came with Trijicons and the p99 didn't. good luck with your choice
