Default Model 41

I bought this Model 41 in 1987 and I paid $200 at the time with a matching Bianchi holster. I have shot more rounds than I can count with. My first pistol.Model41HerrettTrainers.jpg

I have received several inquiries as to how I mounted the Burris Fastfire on my Model 41... as seen near the beginning of this thread.

I've had this setup for about three years and I'm very happy with it in all respects.

I'm posting the instructions in hope that some others may find it helpful.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Instructions on Mounting the Burris Fastfire on a Model 41

After looking at several alternatives to improve the mounting of my Fastfire, I think that I finally hit on the best solution.

Weaver recommends their #62 as the mount for a pre-drilled Model 41. However, this is a mount that's about five inches long. I got one but it was much more than I wanted for my Fastfire.

I got a Weaver #46 mount for about $4 from a local gun store. I took in the #62 to compare contour, holes and guide cuts. The #46 is a little over an inch long but the holes were too far apart.... however the contour and cuts were perfect. I ended up drilling one new hole that aligned perfectly with the guide cut. I did need to sand about 1/32 off the back side to ensure clearance with the iron sight. (Since it's the back side and sitting next to the iron sight, the aluminum color can not be seen.)

It got rid of the extended mount rail out front and actually lets the sight sit back another 1/4 inch.

A vast improvement with the before and after appearance.

Question: Would it be possible to cut the Weaver #62 mount down to 1" or so?

Yes you could cut down the #62 quite easily. That was my original plan and I ordered a second #62 as a $6 insurance policy if I screwed up.

However, I took it over to a local gun store to compare the contour and size to other short Weavers that they had in stock. This is where I spotted the #46 (just a $4 investment).

By flipping it 180 degrees... using one existing hole and drilling one new hole, I was able to get the sight mounted rearward an additional 1/4 inch. It sits quite nicely over the front of the iron sight with adequate clearance.

The advantage of doing this versus chopping the #62 was getting the sight back a little further, and not having a cut metal surface visible under the sight in the front. I'm all for pretty!

(I did grind off about 1/16th on the rear of the #46 for safety clearance with the iron sights.... but it is not visible from any angle.)
Like I'd said in a previous post, I worried for a while.... "What if I screw up my cut or my drill hole?????"

Then I thought, "It's a $5 part... basically a Starbuck's coffee!"

I got lucky and it came out great on the first attempt.

Here is my 1972 model. I live in Norway (the country)

A very nice gun. I only had it for a few weeks, but are very happy with it. Very fun to shoot at 50 yard targets...

My oldest one is serial no. 12304 and my newer one which is actually a 46 is in the 44.000 series area. They translate to 1958 and 1963 I believe. Love them both.

Default Just bought another

I bought a nice Model 41 from '68 with a Heavy Barrel for the range, and it has been a great shooter.

Here is the 41's poor cousin the Model 46. Note the difference in the slide and barrel. This one was presented to the Indiana State police at a match in 1965 by the Indiana Ford delaer's assocition.

No difference at all accuracy wise that I've noticed it's the same pistol almost.

Just no highly polished finish, no cocking indicator and they came with plastic grips. They have a slightly different slide to barrel fit also.

Nice thing about the 41 is you can have both barrels since the barrel is removable and the barrels are interchangeable. I have one with a 5.5" barrel and I have a 7" barrel on order.

Yes, but there are more than two barrels.......there are:

7 3/8" with Muzzle Brake
5" Field
5.5" Heavy
5.5" EFS
7"
5" Optics Only

Plus there are the Bully and Clark aftermarket barrels.

Default me too

I have a burris and would like to lower down to the position yours is in. Would you mind sending the info to me?
Also my burris has a fairly large dot which obscures a small target do you have that problem?

I've been thinking about a 41 for a while, and today I made arrangements to buy this set.

S/N a little under A600000, which I think points to about 1979. Shot some but not a lot, judging from magazine wear (it comes with two), and very well cared for.

Better pics coming in a few days. This is (I hope) my last bad cell phone pic. I expect to have a new phone by the end of the year that has image stabilization and better low-light image capture. It should produce more appealing grab shots.

That's not a red post sight; The previous owner just put some red paint on it. There's nothing on the sight on the shorter barrel, which looks like it was not used very much.

Default My College Pistol Team 41

I purchased this gun in 1973 new for $160 to shoot with on my college pistol team. The presentation case was hand built for me by my Father. Its never been dirty for 24 hours since new. It is semi-retired now. Somehow, I've got to figure out how to split it in two when it comes time to pass it down to my two boys. I hope that you can make out the dates on the tropies (1974-75). I feel real old right now.

Default My pair

Top Ser#A590xxx
Bottom A418xxx

Bottom looked like it had been polished to bare metal but a gunsmith said it's nickel. Does that destroy the value? Doesn't matter to me as I will never sell it.

Mine is sure sensitive. Won't shoot Winchester or Federal. After a trip back to factory, they called and told me to only expect CCI to be trouble-free. I thought that was pathetic! Mine does OK with Remington.

The cocking indicator is a pin that protrudes from the frame at the rear when the pistol is cocked and ready to fire. It was of dubious worth and many were deactivated in search of a finer trigger pull so S&W eliminated it in ( I think) the mid to late 1970's
