Hi Helwig,
As i do bullseye and practical, i discussed those guns with my shooting collegues over the last years. Complaints i really had none with the PC Guns from S&W. Only few where the problems encountered. Some where maybe a tick less accurate than others, but all in all the PC guns worked flawlessly and accurately. In S&W History there were often ups and downs in the quality control and some would be of a good run, some not, that's certainly less true for a PC Gun, but still possible. That's the price to pay for being there for so so long.
Believe it or not, until few years ago, i still used S&W Model 14-x revolvers with superb accuracy. Guns where slightly modified for better letoff. Then came the Smith and Wesson PC gun, a 5906 with 5 inch barrel and i was amazed with its tank build finish and accuracy, but it had its prefered loads. Finish in my opinion was simply the best at that time (some 8 years back) compared to many other guns, with a few rare exceptions (freedom arms, sig 210, some custom build guns).
About 2 years ago the famous Sig 226 X-Six took us over by storm and the accuracy results where fantastic. Most are using it now. At the same time, some kept going with the PC guns and upgraded to the 6 inch Models 5609 and 952, which have formidable accuracy, too. All on a paar with the Sigs.
Going back to the 945 and the LB1911, the reason of the slightly minor accuracy could be (probably is) the the shorter sight radius of those 5 inch guns! That is why you have 6 inch 1911s, too. But most if not a really bad gun would keep the x-ring if properly loaded with your favorite loads and if you do your part!
Yes i also did look closely to the finish. Probably it could be a tick better on some guns, but really the fit was extremely good, even if some guns came with some machinig tool marks and some scratches, but hell, those are really nice guns. For some, to nice to shoot, for others simply a dream to shoot. I am on both sides :-)
Oh, and for the picture below, hope the LesBaer fans will not be bothered because of that Hogue Aluminium Grip put on, i simply found to be a perfect match, isn't it? Would put one on the 945 if they make one...

S&W is taking my 945-1 in for warranty repairs. I hope the new barrel will be properly machined and finished, and hopefully fitted a little bit tighter.

Indeed, i thought of the lifetime guarantee of S&W, they probably will fix it more than a bit tighter. Please let us now...

Default maybe just me

Thats a super nice gun but I have never been able to justify paying that much for a gun when I have some already that are much more accurate and a fraction of the cost. For example -

-My custom 5903 shot sub 1" groups from a sandbag rest at 25yards
-G30 shot about a 2" group @ 25 yards

Like you said - I would have been a little disappointed too. If I paid 2200 for a hand gun I would expect to be pluggin the same hole in the target.

IMHO

Yes, you're right. A good quality gun has not to cost that much and for protection use it should be more reliable than costumized and snug fitted, although Performance Center Guns have proven to be very tight AND reliable.

On the other hand, if you spend 2000 and more for a PC handgun, you expect the best, even if it was a monday pistol. And certainly you expect and probably get top notch customer service. The Name Performance Center has to be earned, isn't it?

Of course it's also a matter of what you (can) plan spending on guns!
Over all the years (i'm 45) i've accumulated a chunk of "not too expensive but good guns" and finally i now would put aside the money and buy one very good maybe each year, instead.

I'm still impressed with S&W PC handguns and others like the ones from LesBaer and (please forgive me this ...) it's a little bit like beautiful girls (or boys for some of you)! Most have their own charm, but some are really and allways standing out, awesome beautiful...

Default 945-1 report

Hi!

I guess I told you already that I took the 945 to my gunsmith in order to improve trigger pull and a few other minor issues. I also had the firing pin block removed, first because it was not correctly fitted and thus was riding on the firing pin even with the grip safety fully depressed, and second because I don't need it (does anyone?). None of my 1911s has got one, so why should the 945 need one? You'd have to drop the gun vertically on the muzzle from at least 30 feet before the firing pin is going to have sufficient inertia to fire a chambered round.

Well, all in all it's a well-made gun, however a few things put a frown on my smitty's and my face:

For once, the barrel to slide fit in battery could have been tighter. Another thing is that apparently, somebody must have goofed while machining the underside of the slide. He had removed too much material and then tried welding some back on. Then he put the slide to the mill, again, only this time in a slightly different position or with a different adjustment. As a result the surface shows a few small indentations where he welded on too little material and a few steps where he failed to adjust the mill correctly...

However, it's a fun gun that in spite of it's minor flaws produces excellent accuracy with the ammo it likes. Surprisingly that seems to be Sellier & Bellot 230 grs. hardball. The CBC 200 grs. lead semi-wadcutters which produce superb results in my Les Baer seem to be less to it's liking.

Anyways, I'm not going to use it for bullseye competition. For that, the Les Baer will remain my favorite. I can see myself using it for steel and all kinids of matches where a timer is used, since the gun points quite well (only a little low if you're used to a 1911's grip angle). Furthermore, the rear sight notch is wider than I like it for bullseye. However, this is perfect for quick target acquisition!

Final statement: I don't regret buying the 945-1 and I guess I never will. I LOVE IT!

Sasu, how about an up date on your 945? You must have it back from S&W by now? Does it shoot better? Are the scratches gone from the barrel? Does it shoot like a 2200 dollar gun, now?

Wow that's sad . I had one of the original " no dash " models 5" with Bomar sights . Fit & finish were excellent . Accuracy was on par with a hand fitted 1911 . Grips / Frame was a little too slim for my taste . Sasu can you get Nosler 185 JHP bullets in Finland ? If so load them up with 4.3 to 4.7 grs. of VihtaVuori N310 , OAL 1.210" , taper crimp .369" . This load should produce a 10 round group @ 50yds of 2.5" or less . If gun won't shoot that well , then I'd send it back or rebarrel . Guns used to come with a light & heavy recoil springs . If barrel is unlocking too early accuracy will suffer . Recoil springs for the 645 will work . Wolff makes a calibration kit with different strength springs . For target use go with the heaviest spring that will allow gun to function . 230 FMJ loads will rarely produce groups of less than 2.5 - 3.0" @ 50yds even from the best fitted 1911 NM pistols . The Nosler load mentioned has been used by many Master Class & our Military Team shooters with excellent results . Other powders will work , but as you're in Finland VihtaVuori is always available .
4.5 grs Bullseye , 4.8 Winchester Super Target are also good loads with the Nosler bullet . It's heartbreaking to spend that much on a gun that won't shoot . I'd also be more than a little angry . Good luck & keep us posted .

Hi bad_man_ one,

Thanks for posting.
It seems that my 945-1 is different from your 4506-1: the recoil spring I found installed in the gun is slightly shorter than the other spare recoil spring I found in the Performance Center box, unfortunatly not in proper a bag.
I could test today the gun with 100 Winchester rounds and it performerd well, no problem at all in reloading or other, so I think the installed spring was for normal ammunition.
Should the other spring really be for WC ammunition, it is slightly longer than the installed one.

This is exactly how I found the spare spring ...

(pictures is not mine but from this thread )
SOLD: Smith & Wesson Performance Center 945-1 New in PC attache case - Calguns.net

EDIT:
I finally found what I was looking for ...

Quote:
The 945 comes with two recoil springs, a 14-pound typically assembled inside the pistol, and a 12-pound spring found in the handsome Performance Center presentation case. "The lighter spring is for wadcutters and similar light match ammo," Jim Rae told me, "and the heavier spring is for ball and duty ammunition."

Oddly enough, with the 14-pound spring in place we experienced several failures to feed. all taking the form of 12 o'clock misfeeds. These occurred with jacketed hollowpoint and roundnose reloads alike. Yet. mild midrange "softball amino perked fine with the heavy spring in place. Swapping in the 12-pound spring, we found malfunctions disappeared, and the gun worked 100 percent with everything including the light loads. Slightly move recoil could be felt, but that was a small price to pay for total reliability.

I was expecting tighter groups as this pistol is famous for accuracy. I will continue testing and next time I will build a better sand bag set up for support.

A very gun proficient friend of mine field stripped the gun, examined the parts and their fitting and did some measurements. He was not too impressed, especially considering the semi-custom price range. I recently bought a Les Baer Premier II 1911 and will be comparing these two guns in the coming months. In the fitting department the Les Baer wins hands down, accuracy and ergonomics need more testing.
My 945 was more accurate than the Les Baer Bullsye gun I had....I use a 10lb. spring (Wolff spring) and shoot 200gr.SWC from Montana Bullet over 4gr. Bullseye. Accuracy is unreal....literally 1 hole. At 50 yds, the gun shoots 2" groups of Nosler 185gr.HP over 4.4gr. Bullseye. Break it in, shoot 200-500 rounds, strip the gun, clean with Militec or synthetic oil and lube, keep lots of lube on the barrel (rides all the time in the Briley bushing), and be amazed......
i do use a Red Dot.....

I shoot an 845, it is a tac driver, 2" at 50 yards bullseye, consistant 100s at 25 yard line. All with iron sights. A rare piece. Been looking at a matching 945 from the same shop. Its all bright finish, a few years old but unfired.

I just heard Model 945 production has been discontinued from Jan 2011, so that I could get one of last available in Italy ...
Is this true ?

I use a 180 grain LSWC over 4.7 grains of Win 231 with an OAL of 1.250". I also only use Winchester cases and federal primers. Very accurate light target load that for me yields 1.5" groups at 25 yards off bags. I also need to use a 12 lb wolf spring for the pistol to cycle properly and lock the slide back on an empty magazine. I have never shot anything else out of the gun as I only use it for bullseye.

o yeah and tighter..

I load at 5.2gr, W231 same bullet..one hole 5 round strings @ 50'...so at 75' that has to be no more than 3/4"-1" ..

my 945 PC is one of the first..00xx....it out shoots my Gold Cup..and is my favorite...when I bought it years ago NEW, I thought I paid a lot...but from what I see what they are getting new...holy smokes I gotta good deal...

It'd be a shame, if true...it's probably my favorite gun, even more than the 1911 platform.

EDIT: It still shows up at the S&W site, so presumably it's still in production.

Hi at-home-daddy,
it seems it is really true, this was confirmed me by Smith & Wesson Belgium, so I guess no longer 945 model imported to Europeì.
Same situation with model 952 ... sad but true.

I wonder, though, if that simply means they're no longer being imported, or if they're no longer in production -- for those of us in the US, that's two very different things. If it's still on the S&W site, I have to think that means it's still in production, but then again it could just mean they have some in stock that still need to be moved. Guess time will tell. Glad I already have my three (5" stainless, 4" stainless, and 4" blued).

I was at their Springfield, Ma location yesterday and according to them, I picked up the last 5" they had available. They did have a 3.5" in their display case though.

That's really unfortunate. I can appreciate it's a high-end, high-dollar hybrid'ish gun that didn't really fit any popular niche, but it remains my favorite model of handgun, and I'm sorry to see it go.

I shot a full size S&W945PC in bullseye pistol for several years. It willprovide nice tight 10 shot groups of less than 1 inch at 50 ft. I have a Docter red dot reflex sight mounted on a base which replaces the rear sight. I have not shot bullseye psitolfor several years but still shoot the gun in steel and pin matches.

Default Need to identify 945-1SKU NUMBER.

I am searching for a specific PC design that it two tone, black slide top rounds and WAVY not fish scale cocking grooves. The slide side rails are polished stainless. The frame is black with polished stainless side flats. The gun appears on another thread below.

I have a number of high end pistols but this pure mechanical art. Please help me zero in on the SKU and hopefully find one. Do you?
