Default value of a Model 41 7 3/8" barrel with muzzle brake?

I am going to buy an older, 1960 production, I believe, Model 41, it has the 5.5" barrel on it and comes with an extra 7 3/8" barrel with a muzzle brake. The barrel is in excellent condition, but has some very light scratching on one side, these scratches do not go through the bluing and can only be seen by holding the barrel at the "right" angle and catching the light the right way; the bore is mint.

What is the current market on one of these barrels? I already have a 1977 production Model 41 with a 7 3/8" barrel, so I really don't need an extra barrel for the new 41 and I've never cared for the muzzle brake. I'm not 100% sure I want to sell it, but am leaning that way, depending on what the market is like.

Thanks much!

Default 7 3/8" bbl

In very good condition the 7 3/8" bbl w/brake is worth at least $300. The last one I sold was in mint unfired condition, later production with the regular '&', and went for $400. One that was as new with the lazy '&' went for $500 on GB due to a minor bidding war. I have seen several early 60s 41s in excellent condition that had a 5.5" heavy barrel on them, which would not be collector correct, making the 7 3/8" (lazy '&') a desireable purchase. I assume that it does have a 5.5" barrel and not the 5" LW which might be factory. I and a number of others would be interested the barrel...

Thanks, JP. Well, I assume it has the 5.5" barrel on it rather than a 5", I was actually unaware S&W made a LW 5" barrel. I should pick up the pistol today and will post a pic.

OK, here's a pic of the 41, so is this a field or target barrel on the pistol? Again, thanks for the help!

That is an early field barrel and the 7 3/8" is also an early barrel (both have the lazy '&'). One of the two would be original to the pistol and a factory letter would indicate which one was on it when shipped (I can't make out the seial #, 28???). 7 3/8" looks decent but would need clearer photos of both sides, top and breech face to give value... unless there are some unseen problems with the 7 3/8", $300 wouldn't be out of line.

Thanks, JP, I certainly appreciate your feedback! Yes, the SN is 28,000 range. The 7 3/8" barrel isn't bad, but does have a bit more of the light scratching like you can see in the rear of this pic, it just doesn't show up in the pic, it's not deep, really doesn't even go through the blue, but is there; the bore and top of the breech is excellent.

I haven't decided if I want to sell it or keep it. It is neat having both barrels, but I really bought it for the 5" barrel; since I already have a 7 3/8" gun, it doubtful I'd ever use this one. Not like I don't have any other gun related stuff sitting around that never gets used!

Thanks again!
