S&W 4006 Why do I want/not want one?
I am not very familiar with S&W pistols but I am considering a new 40 cal and I was looking at one of these on another forum.
What do I need to know about them good and not so good before I buy something I wont like.
I have had Sigs in the past but have sold them so I need
educated about Smiths if you would please.
Thanks for the help

Great shooters, built like a tank, eats anything, totally reliable, traditional SA/DA but a tick heavy when compared to the tupperware wonders. That's all I got.

I have a 4006, it is one very fine gun. It was the first 40 caliber pistol built. It's like a tank with grips.

Gentlemen: Thanks so very much for your help. If I could ask one more favor, what would be a good price to pay for one?
If you could please.

No down side. Around $350 to $400 'round here.

It's a good gun. I sent mine to Bar-sto for a .357 sig barrel; cool easy conversion if they're still doing 'em.

The 4006 is an excellent pistol. I bought mine new when they fist came out in the early 90s. I own a CS9, CS40, 908 & the 4006. Of all the pistols I own, my 4006 is still my favorite & the only drawback is that it is a bit heavy for CCW. I will echo what the other posters have said it is build like a tank.

... And if you run out of ammo, you can just use it as an all steel Louisville Slugger.

4006
The one I had was work to shoot accurately. Weight has something to do with it being more like work than like fun. They are a beautiful piece of machinery and should last at least two lifetimes.

I have a 5906 that reminds me a lot of the 4006. It too is work to shoot, but the recoil is very manageable.

The 4006 was my first pistol and it is still one of my favorites. It can be a bit heavy, but it aims naturally for me, is sturdy, accurate, fun to shoot, and just a great all around gun.
For a fun example, I got my 4006 used and the firing pin channel was so blocked from a lack of proper cleaning that when you removed the firing pin you couldn't see light through the channel. It did however fire around 50 rounds, before I detail stripped it, in that dirty condition without any problem.

Maybe I asked the wrong question,
what 40 would be your recommendation [based on the comments about weight]

The 4006 was also my first pistol at the age of 16 in 1996. I carried her religously until I got a FS M&P .40 in late 2006. Then I got a Compact M&P a little later. I haven't carried the 4006 much since I aquired the M&P's. Weight being the main issue. I packed that 4006 for years in Galco's Miami Classic during the winter and a Safariland 527 belt slide during the summer. That shoulder rig would cause headaches and back pain after a while...the gun and mags are quite of bit a weight.

Depending on what size of gun you want there are several options. The M&P 40 is a great choice in any size available. The 4013 or 4013 TSW is a compact version of the 4006. It is much lighter and should serve you just as well. The 4053 is the double action only version of the 4013. If you like the size of the 4006 without the weight go for the 4003/4003TSW. It has an alloy frame and weighs less.

Thanks guys for all the good counsel,
ended up passing on the 4006, got down to either a Sigma 40 or a
XD 40. I bought the Sigma.
I had a 9mm Sigma a while back and liked it but sold it now I think I will be happy with the 40. Gonna take it out and shoot tomorrow.
Thanks again for the help, I think the 4006 would have been too heavy
This is a great forum I am glad to be on board.

Bennett, like I said earlier I have the 4006 and yes it is heavy for concealed carry but with a good belt and holster it's not bad for a few hours. I also have a Glock 23 which is light and works great as a CCW and it is pretty darn accurate. I also have a CS40, no longer made by Smith & Wesson, but this gun is a sleeper. It is very accurate, fairly heavy for a small gun but tough as nails. I have just recently bought a used Sig P229 DAK...AWESOME. Very accurate and is an easy carry but not as light as the G23. I had an XD40 and that is a very good gun, but I just had a devil of a time carrying it concealed. I'm 5'10" and 220 and I couldn't get that thing to ride without printing. I think the 4006 would be great with a shoulder holster, I will find out this winter. The little CS40 is very good if you can find one. But as far as 40's go for everyday carry th G23 is the lightest I have but I would trust the Sig P229 the best.
