Default Another 1006 vs 1076 question...

I have both a 1006 & 1076. During cleaning after a recent range trip I noted that the 1006 recoil spring is not only much longer but significantly stiffer.

Is this normal?

I don't want to beat up the 1076 if it's been fitted with a lighter spring sometime in it's unknown past.

Well the 1076 has a shorter slide so therefore you have a shorter spring. You should replace both anyways if you do not know how old they are. They are almost free they are so cheap, especially if Midway has em in stock. Thats the first thing I do when I buy a used auto.

The factory recoil spring for the 1006 is 18 lbs. The factory recoil spring for the 1076 is 17 lbs. I'm currently using a Wolff 20 lb. spring in my 1026 and a Wolff 19 lb. spring in my 1076. How far are your pistols throwing brass?

From the Wolff Spring web site:

3. What weight recoil spring should I use with a particular load?

This is a very common but hard question to answer in exact terms and in most cases an exact answer is not possible. There are many factors which influence the correct weight recoil spring to use. These factors include the particular ammunition brand and load, individual pistol characteristics, individual shooting styles and your individual, subjective feeling of how the gun shoots and should feel.

The factory spring weight is designed to operate the pistol with what would be considered average loads, plus or minus a little. It is not uncommon for manufacturers to specify what they consider a factory ammunition load.

In general terms, the heaviest recoil spring that will allow the pistol to function reliably is the best choice - tempered by the above factors. As a rule of thumb, if your spent casings are first hitting the ground in the 3 to 6 foot range, then the recoil spring is approximately correct. If you are ejecting beyond the 6-8 foot range, then a heavier recoil spring is generally required. If your casings are ejecting less than 3 feet, a lighter recoil spring may be needed to assure reliable functioning.

Taking these factors into consideration, it then comes down to how the gun feels and performs when shooting - in your judgment. However, using too light a recoil spring can result in damage to the pistol and possible injury to you.

I'm right there with you, a Wolff 20# in my 1006 and 19# in my 1066 and 1076. They function perfectly and throw the brass out nicely.

I have a 22lb spring in my 1006 and it still throws brass over ten feet. That's a 1200 fps 180 grain load. Is something wrong here?

It is nearly impossible to control the distance any 10mm pistol throws empties by changing a recoil spring. The slide velocity is just too great and increasing the spring pressure causes the slide to slam forward with just that much greater force and can also cause feeding issues in some guns. If the gun cycles and ejects correctly without signs of battering, there is no need to modify it by changing springs.
