S&w 422
I've been looking at the mod. 422 with 4 1/2" barrel and wood grips. I'd like some feedback on this gun. Good, Bad, Treasure or junk? Opinions please. TJ

Hello teejay9,
I picked up a 422 about a month ago($250). Blue 4.5" barrel. Very nice shooter. 700 rounds without a single failure of any kind so far. It now owns the record over all my guns. Unbelievable to me so far. Double taps all day long within an inch or so at 7yds. . Crazy fun to shoot.
OH, forgot to mention do not dry fire the 422. It will damage the firing pin. At the moment these are not available anywhere. S&W stopped mfg. of part. But, all is not lost. I like the gun so much that I have most parts that are important to have. They can be found. Here is some info. regarding the scarce firing pin.
Jack First Gunshop - 1201 Turbine Drive, Rapid City, South Dakota
part number is:102230000 - firing pin for 422/622/2206
phone number is 605-343-9544
They are having some made before the end of this year. I will be notified when they get in.

I purchased a S&W 422 new in the late 1980's. I have the blue 6" barrel model with target sights. I like this gun lots of fun to shoot. seems to like winchester ammo best.

I have 2 of them. Target model with the wood grips and the other one. I love both of them. Damn fine shooters. I had been living in a cave for a long time and didn't even know they existed. I found that even though it is rediculously light the recoil is not that bad at all. I held a 622 stainless version side by side with the 422 and could not believe the weight difference.
+1 on the firing pin issue. Get a spare if you find one as S&W dropped service parts for these models.

great gun
I purchased one brand new in the early 90's for about $180. It is a great hiking, camping, small game gun. Mine has the 6in barrel with adj sights. It is very accurate. I would never part with it.

Nice guns. They were known as "the poor mans Mod 41." I've had several in different barrel lengths. Finish can be a little fragile but they shoot very well and have decent triggers out of the box. I sold mine in the end because I found a heavier /all stainless version which I prefer.
p.s. The "no dry fire" rule applies to all Rimfire firearms. You can break a firing pin or damage the edge of the chamber. Either is not good.

I have the same pistol you're looking at. I picked up my 422 about three years ago. I like it, and haven't had any problems with it.

UPDATE:
The firing pins are ready!! I was told a month or so ago that 200 would be made. Now there are only 198. Get'um now or cry about it later. I can now build a second SW422 if need be.

S&w 422
I really like my S&W 422. The fixed barrel has the advantage in that a suppressor can be easily added. I replaced the original muzzle nut with an adaptor which holds the barrel in place but has a treaded extension onto which I can screw my suppressor. I have made adaptors for five different .22LR pistols so I can swap the suppressor between the different guns. Works great.

I received mine as well. They appear to be well made. Hopefully I won't be needing to use one any time soon. Well, the streak of no failures ended this past weekend at 1003 rounds. I had picked up a box of Winchester Super-X (1300fps) to check out. One failure to extract(damaged rim). I'll stick with Remington Viper and Aguila Interceptors from now on. I have shot over a thousand rounds of each in both my SW422 and Beretta U22 Neos without any failures at all. I realize one failure is not much out of a hundred rounds, but compare to none in two thousand, its an easy call. Of course now that I have made this statement, I just jinx myself.

I have some wood ones in nice shape. There a a few different makers of after market firing pins, not hard to come by.

Jack First Gun shop is still in business and they have firing pins for the S&W 422/622/2206 (28.00 ea.) I ordered 2 and I even ordered an extra FP for my S&W Model 61. (22.00) plus shipping. They make them in their machine shop.
You can find grips on ebad. The factory black rubber sell for pretty cheap but I have seen the factory walnut grips go for over $100.00. I bid on a pair of wood grips that ended during the Super Bowl and picked them up for $35.00. They were factory grips and came sealed in a factory bag. I guess I did alright on them.

There is another business supplying replacement firing pins for these S&W 22's--which doesn't charge JackFirst's prices (especially shipping). It is EWK Arms, and they charge $14 a pin and around $3.00 shipping. I think JackFirst quoted me $10 for shipping 2 firing pins. EWK Arms is a member over at RimFireCentral and a reputable vendor.

s&w 422 is great
I just recently tried a s&w 422.
I did not really know it but now remember seeing it from time to time.
It is light and carries and handles well.
I find that it shoots really well.
No problems at all.
I have used subsonic and standard velocity.
It is accurate for me.
I am glad that I found it.

422 and 622 are alloy frame, 422 is a black anodized finish with blue slide. The 622 is silver. The 2206 frame is stainless, so it is heavier.

Do a search on this website - there are several threads about that great little series of pistols! I really like them.

Bought a 422 today
Hello all
Long time lurker here who just barely bought a 6" blued S&W 422 with wood grips and three magazines in 95% condition. Haven't shot it yet but man does it seem to be a sweet little gun. Paid $350 for it and am wondering if anyone can help me identify when it was made by it's serial number: TCA02XXX?
Thanks,
Mike

Mike,
The easiest way to find out the ship date is to call the S&W Customer Service desk. Provide them with the full serial number and they will be able to tell you in less than a couple minutes.
