I own a Sigma 9mm. Fantastic handgun. Trigger is a little heavy at first, but you get used to it. Just takes practice. Very reliable and accurate. Never fired an SD. I hear they are a fine weapon.

Good luck.

If you've been shooting only single-action pistols, strongly suggest you shoot the Sigma, SD and M&P (including the Pro) before you buy anything.
The combat tupperware has a very different trigger than an STI, and we don't want you back screaming the trigger is no good and you can't stand it.

yeah I'd like to shoot all three of them but don't know anyone that has any of them, I have a couple springfield xd's and DA only revolvers, nothing is going to be close to my sti's but I want something that is reliable and inexpensive to cc with. And I'd like to have the 9mm cause they are much cheaper to shoot than my 45's.

I can't tell what part of the world you are in from your profile, but H&H in Oklahoma City rents them for use on their indoor range.

The SD trigger is similar to the XD.

A Sigma or SD would be a huge step down from what you already own. You are going to want to consider a Glock 19, Glock 26 or one of the compact XDs. Or a compact S&W M&P series if you really want to buy a Smith & Wesson. Asking here is not going to give you an impartial opinion and I'd hate for you to wind up with a poor quality gun that you'll be unhappy with. Don't buy based on price alone.

Well your post was definitely indicative of your claim, which I will declare to be BS.

The SD9 is an excellent platform and easily the equal of the G19 or XD. Try and find a bad review on one and you will come up empty. The Sigma is also a good firearm for what it is. When it comes to poly Smiths you really do get a good, better, best situation. The Sigma is a value line gun, the SD is a good mid-grade gun (like the aforementioned G19 and XD) and the M&P is a step ahead. So figure out what your budget allows and buy accordingly. As long as your expectations equal your purchase price you will be pleased.

Going to a glock from shooting 1911's and similar frames will be a step backwards in itself. Unless you want to relearn everything you know stick with something with a similar grip angle. The SD is a great weapon. The M&P's are a little larger and thicker unless you get a compact but even then it is minimally smaller 1/4" in length and about 1/8" shorter but still thicker. The trigger is just what I look for in a SD gun and the capacity is just right too. 16+1 in 9mm and 14+1 in .40.

Where are you located? If you are anywhere near you are welcome to come shoot my poly smiths. I own at least one of each.

My wife and I both EDC Sigma's 9VE's. After 30+ years of 6-shooter wheel guns the Sigma was my first venture into the "can't depend on them not to jam" semi's. Both have been reliable weapons however I would go for an SD 40, or 9 if you prefer over a Sigma now. It is a great value and all reviews have been 100% positive. I have fired 5 differant M&P's and all triggers for me are too light and short for an EDC weapon. Just my opinioun. Hey, it's only a gun, sell it if you don't like it!

Differences between the SD and the Sigma:
SD has steel M&P sites, front one being a nite site
SD has a standard rail for attachments
SD comes w/ better, lighter trigger than Sigma
SD comes in stainless w/ black melonite coating

For the amount of money difference between the two, my opinion is go for the SD! They have improved most of the issues that people have with the Sigma. The steel sites on the SD are a big enough improvement over the blocky plastic Sigma sites to justify the price difference to me.
P.S. I have both, and neither of them have ever jammed or malfunctioned.

I love it when the choices are clear & someone slides in to try to convince the poster they don't know how to spend thier money! Anyway! I have a 9VE & love it! I have around 1600 rounds through it with out a problem. But you said you would be CCing this gun. For CC I would suggest the SD. It is similar to the Sigma with an improved lighter trigger. From my few trigers pulls in Gun shops I would guess around 6 or 7 lbs. I really like the look of the SD as well. I think with what you are used to shooting & what you want to do with it, you would be happier with the SD. Good luck either way! Let us know what you decide!

S&W “new” SD9 and SD40 | The Firearm Blog

This link contains comments about the SD9. About halfway down the linked page, in a post by "Dan", posted at 10:06 on Dec 21st, one can find an interesting detailed side by side comparison of internals of an SD and a Sigma. The comparison starts in the 7th paragraph of Dan's post.

Yes, thanks. Obvious the commenters bashing it have never shot one. I'm already planning to pick up a SD40 to go with my SD9.

From what I've been reading the SD is better than the Sigma and the M&P still better. I may go that way after I'm through with my Sigma.
The S&W are all good guns, I'm told.
It looks like you get what you are willing to pay for.

I had the 40VE a few years ago that I used as a truck gun. It was accurate and reliable and I wouldn't hesitate to get another. The SD series seems to me to be a "Sigma" with as many M&P features as they could squeeze in for the price. I considered the SD9 for a recent purchase but my budget allowed me to get an M&P so...

I recently purchased a SD9 as my first gun. I really agree with earlier comments about trying them out yourself. I can speak to my own reasoning for choosing the SD9.

Every gun smith and shop person I talked to (3, from different stores in my area) all strongly suggested I stay away from the Sigma. I realize that a lot of folks love theirs, but that's what I heard across the board.

I very nearly purchased a M&P compact, I like its overall size, but the grip was too short for my hand. The full sized M&P was too big. This is my only gun atm and I might need (want) to cc it.

Also, money was an issue for me. (or perhaps more accurately, an issue with my wife)

I picked up the SD9 Home Defense Kit. A SD9, a micro 90 light, and a Micro Gun Vault for locking it up in my van on days I head to the range after work. was $460

The SD had the best grip for my hand of all the guns I tried. (I think I shot every rental gun in the range at least once) The only gun that felt better was a Beretta 92, but it is out of my price range.

If I can find a mag that extends the grip like the xd compact has ,I still might trade in my SD for a M&P compact.

I wish there was a crimson tracer laser grip for the sd, too. there's not.

Anyone know of a grip activated ,laser that would work on a SD?

Dan, congrats on your purchase. I own the SW9VE. I'm very happy with it. I have heard good things about the SD9. I don't doubt that it's a fine handgun. Glad you are happy with it.

I've checked out a few sub compacts as well. Glock 26 for one. I don't like the feel of my pinky finger hanging over the grip. They have extension mags, but I really like the Glock 19. Fits my hand perfectly. Been looking at one.

Yes, I've heard quite a few stories about the Sigma Series. Trigger seems a bit stiff at first (10 lbs) but one gets used to it. I just reached 1300 rounds through my Sigma 9. Shoots and feels great.

Keep us posted on the SD9. Shoot often!

Are rounds jamming? You might be limp wristing, or clean your mags. I've broken down my mags once. Now I just clean the white plastic feed ramp with solvent. I haven't had any problems with my Sigma 9. Also, I clean my Sigma after each trip to the range.

Good luck.

Most of the gun shops bash the sigma because they read it on the internet and have no first hand experience. I have been plenty of places shooting with my "***" Sigma and made more than a few change their opinion. The SD corrects 99.9% of the complaints with the sigma. I have the SD9, SD40, SW40V limited, and a M&P 40c. I often find myself carrying the Sd40 over the 40c. I do have 2 full size mags with xgrips for backups but still for some reason keep going back to the SD. The trigger just makes me feel much safer with 1 in the chamber carry.

The Sigma is a good gun. The SD and the M&P apparently have some improvements, but I've never bothered to look at them. I've got a Sigma, my wife has a Glock 19. I used to have an XD-9 until I got bored with it and traded it off. I really couldn't tell you much difference in the three except the Sigma costs about half what the other two did. They might have been "better" but they sure weren't twice as good.

Whatever you get, it's not like you're going to marry it. If you don't like it, sell it and get something else. I do it all the time.

Ya know to be honest I have never been a polymer pistol fan. And I always shot either 9mm or 45acp, and I own a few sig sauer ( they are my favorite) so to say the least all my fire arms have always been all metal guns, carried a glock when I was in Law enforcement. Well I wanted to try a 40 cause of all the stuff ya read etc blah blah blah. to make a long story short I bought a sw40ve yeah i know it plastic, but I gotta be honest with ya Im pretty impressed with the gun, trigger is revolver like but for a gun that has no external safteys I cant see how this is a detriment, yeah it takes a little bit to get used to but will make ya a better shooter. And after lookng and handling the SD9/40 and the M&P pro I can assure you that one or two will definately make it into the stable

IMHO the Sigma is love it or hate it
for me, it was the latter
the SD40 is a sharp gun and feels the same in hand as the Sigma, but has a notably lighter trigger pull and the M&P sights aren't bad either!
the Sigma is a sharp gun (i love stainless slides), but the trigger was the deal breaker for me. just didn't want to force myself to like a gun. i didn't leave the SW family though!

What kind of prices are seeing for the Sigma, SD, and M&P?
Basic retail prices around here have them at around $100 difference in price--299, 399, and 499.
I see the used M&P's going for around 400-425.
I haven't seen any used SD's yet.
Used Sigma's go for around $200-250, depending on number of mags. My Sigma 40VE was $275 with 4 mags, Fobus holster and rail mount adaptor and remainder of the box of ammo(50ct.) after he fired 13 rds out of it and was about 4 months old.
I'm thinking I might like to try an SD if I can find a good used one for 300. For 400, I can usually take my pick of Glock 19/23 Gen3 model, XD, or XDSC, or M&P or M&P Compact, all used of course but like new. Most people don't shoot them much to begin with. If they put 500rds through them it was a lot.

Yeah, I bought my Sigma 9mm for $299 on sale at a national chain recently. I think, however, that's kind of an everyday out the door price on the internet. It's important to factor in FFL/shipping fees and sales tax to online or store front purchases.

I hear stories about problems with very early versions of this gun, but Sigma has been produced by one of the world's (if not THE world's) preeminent firearms makers for close to 2 decades (17 years). Yes, industry leaders have made bad product before...but never for two decades.

I have, or rather had (my wife shot it and loved it) an SW40VE and have had no issues with it after close to a 1,000 rounds. I have an SD40 on order to carry as a duty weapon. I love the Sigma, trigger pull and all, but after shooting a friend's SD9 I just had to have one.

For a CCW you can't beat a Sigma. In my humble opinion you really don't want a gun with a light trigger in your waistband (hopefully you invest in a good holster). I don't like to carry a gun with a safety and the heavier trigger pull is a good thing.

It's your money, I believe you could trust any of the 3.

I have not shot either but I have handled them both very recently and many times. I'd say they are a bit different in measurements and fit. For me, I can say that I cannot reach the SD's mag release properly. The Sigma fits my hand better and easy to reach mag release so there is some grip difference for sure.

My 2 cents.

Smile New here

Hi all, Im new here..I've had my sd9 for a couple mo's now and put around 2000 rounds through it. Some s&b, wwb and a lot of my hand loads. I have not had a single hiccup yet. At first I thought I made a big mistake buying it because the trigger seemed very heavy to me but after around 400 rds it lightened up and smoothed out so well that Im luvin it now. It's my 1st smith and wesson but it won't be my last.
