They would have to improvise a better extraction system that didn't
use the berylium or whatever expensive material the original guns
featured.

I'd like to reduce my ammo pile a bit and eliminate 38/357, so
a 9mm revolver (if not .357 SIG) has my interest.

Me too.
I would love a 9mm snubbie.
Almost got my M36 drilled out, but the walls were too thin.

Agree with you mg357, in both 3" and 4" barrels.

+1!!! A new 9mm S&W revolver would be awesome, especially if it was offered as a NL model.

I would be jumping for joy if S&W ever started making the 547 again. I would like a stainless gun with the 3 inch barrel. I would sell all my revolvers (ok, maybe not all) and buy 2 or 3 of the 547.

I agree 100% mg357, and have been saying the same for some time. I was just about to make a similar thread, but will just post my suggestion here:

For some time, since I purchased a Model 547, I have been fascinated with the idea of a 9MM revolver. It’s not so amazing when you consider that S&W (and others) have been chambering revolvers for .45 ACP since 1917, and of course the 547 and 940 in 9MM. Many are not even aware that even Ruger chambered the Speed Six in 9MM.

Personally, I prefer 9MM over .38 Spl. Even the +P and +P+ stuff. The reason I prefer it is not just the power/energy gains, but the size to power ratio, and I have included a little comparison photo that I made just as a quick reference that I have used in some other posts. In a speed loader, 9MM has a substantially smaller size for carrying than .38 Spl. It’s even better if you start talking about moon clips. Another of my preferences are the K-Frame S&W series, which is one of the reasons I liked the 547 so much, however, I feel that the J-Frames are practically made for the concept of 9MM in a revolver.

SIzePowerComparison38.jpg

So here’s my proposal. I would like to see a return of 9MM to the S&W revolver world, and since there is clearly a market for .45 ACP revolvers, I just don’t see why there wouldn’t be a market for 9MM, considering popularity, availability and cost of 9MM ammunition. Lastly, in some other posts, I had jokingly referred to a stainless version of a 547 as 647 and was immediately corrected that one existed, so I have created some model names unused and that have some familiarity with past models and some others suggestions for model names, I claim no originality here. I also am split between the idea of the 547 beryllium clip and pin system and the moon clip versions. My current plan is to make my own moon clip version of a stainless 547 by converting a Model 64 cylinder, but that’s just a project, not what I’d really like to be able to purchase as I think the bore of the revolver would have to reflect this caliber/cartridge to be accurate and effective.
So what follows are a “concept” model of a 9MM line of S&W revolvers.

J-Frame:
Model 960 - Stainless, moon-clips and barrel offerings such as 1.5”, 2” and 3”
Model 369 Night Guard – same as 960, but in NG configuration
Model 369 M&P – same as night guard/960 but in M&P.

K-Frame:
Model 947 – Blue, moon clip, fixed sights 3” and 4” barrel lengths
Model 948 – Blue, moon clip, adjustable sight 4” and 6” barrel lengths

Model 964 – Stainless Steel, moon clip, fixed sights 3” and 4” barrel lengths
Model 967 – Stainless Steel, moon clip, adjustable sights 4” and 6” barrel lengths

Model 364 M&P – 964 in M&P configuration
Model 364 Night Guard – 964 in NG configuration

Model 547 Classic – the original 547 in round butt 3” and square butt 4” with original beryllium clip and pin system.
Model 514 Classic - the famous Model 14 but in 9MM and 547 original beryllium clip and pin system.

An honorable mention would be for S&W to make a conversion cylinder (like Ruger’s Blackhawk and Korth) for one of the current models such as (but not limited to) the 64, and stamp the barrels with “.38 SPL +P/9MM PARA” or something as such.

So, how many agree with the 9MM revolver concept (not necessarily mine)? S&W, pleeease, please, please...

Anyway, just a thought.

Given the dominance of the .40 S & W in the LE market, how about an alloy-frame, short barrel 5-shot revolver as a back-up gun? It would be nice if it had the rimless extractor system also. If Charter Arms can do it, surely S & W can also.

Default S&W 547

Just doing some research on the 547 because one was in my father's estate and I'm currently selling off most of his collection. I knew there were rimless revolvers but never remember seeing one in 9mm before now. Unfortunately, boxes for most of the guns were tossed before I got there, including this one's, so that's a bummer. This one is the 3" and had an extra pair of grips and leather holster. Condition is about 95%. Any input on the values right now(high/low)? I'm not finding many on the auction sites right now.

Thanks tekarra, and after all is said and done, like you and mg357, I'd just be satisfied if S&W would bring back the 547 in it's original form, either size. Seems like there is a lot of interest in 9MM revolvers from S&W, always glad to see a new thread about 547s.

A 9mm revolver would be great. If there would be a way to get around having to use moon clips and just load into the cylinder it would be better. I am not sure if most 9mm revolvers would be capable of shooting 380 auto but that would be an added bonus. Obviously not for cost or effectiveness, just for those who have both ammo types and would like to shoot it. Anyway 9mm revolvers need to make a comeback at an affordable, practical cost.

snw,
The S&W 547 does not use moon clips, it has unique extractor system. Ruger make a Six, in 9 mm, for the foreign market a few years back that also did not require moon clips. The new Charter Arms revolver also does not need clips, don't know if the 9mm has been released.

It's sad that Taurus offers a 9mm revolver, but S&W does not........

Again, forgive my ignorance but I would like to see that model that looks like a Model 10 in 9mm, make a comeback. I guess the solution would be to buy a used 10 and have someone like Mark at Pinnacle cut the chambers for clipped 9mm.

Stan,
I think you are referring to the 547. If late, I too, have been toying with the idea of converting a 10 or a 64. Would like to have it fitted with a separate cylinder to shoot both calibres like the FN Barracuda.

Tekerra,

Awhile back on another thread I think we've had this discussion, to include Stan. Somewhere, I've heard about accuracy problems with converting .38/.357 bores to shoot 9mm. Have you heard of this? I'm curious if the 547/940 and any other revolver nines are actually of smaller bore than the .38/.357 or are they the same? For instance, the bores must be the same for the Blackhawk and Korth converters, and I've never heard of big accuracy problems with them. I've got the same idea of converting an M10 or M64, just wondering if there is some experience out there with how well that works out accuracy-wise. Will a replacement/clip-milled cylinder drop in, or must they be fitted?

Yes, that's it Tekarra! I saw a pic of the 547 and it instantly went on my "needs" list, they are nearly impossible to find though. I'm a Model 10 fanatic and that would be a really fun gun.

I recall the conversation we had about accuracy issues with 9mm conversions, it may depend on the individual gun. Some who have converted .38-.357 revolvers to 9mm have reported mediocre accuracy, while others say the revolvers they converted have been as accurate as they were with .38's.

I hate to mention the Brazilian Boat Anchors but it seems that Taurus uses the .38 barrels in their 9mm snub revolver, a lot of the reviews I read report marginal accuracy and in some cases keyholing.

I have never slugged the bores of a 9 mm and .38 S&W revolvers so I cannot make a definite statement regarding the barrels. Maybe I will have to load a few 9 mm bullets in a .38 Spl. case and compare it to a .38 load. Once in a moment of supreme carelessness I loaded some lead .357 bullets in 9 mm cases and fired a couple before realising something was amiss. The recoil felt excessive so I opened the cylinder, removed the remaining rounds and immediately noticed the bullets were my .38. No damage to the revolver, but I sure kicked my butt and went back to my one calibre on the bench at a time.

Interesting about the loading mistake. What caused the excessive recoil, the bullets forcing their way through the bore? I saw on another thread where there was some experimentation with loading 9mm bullets in .38s (not sure which model S&W). I had seen some mention about accuracy problems in regards to bore sizes, but have never seen an actual specification that the 547 (or 940) is actually a smaller bore diameter than the .357/.38. I would think it would be the same, just for reasons of cost and effort, but could certainly be wrong on that. Seems to me a little extra care went into that 547, I reckon that's why we all like it so much.

Stan, you've got to get one. I paid a fortune for mine, but haven't regretted it, plus, the seller was a good man, and I don't mind paying top dollar to a decent person; he needed the money, I needed that 547. They come up on sites like GB every now and then, sometimes with even fair prices... my next one is a 3", or a conversion like tekarra and I are thinking about.

I am going stateside in December and will finally be able to see my 547. I know that sounds crazy, but at least I have one waiting for me. I had entertained an idea of bringing it over here to Germany, but in order to do so, it would have been costly and a paperwork struggle. But here's the craziest part, in order to be allowed to shoot it here in Germany, I would have had to have it proofed by the German authorities which would mean a bunch of stamps all over it, and I really hate to do that. I can't wait to shoot it, as you might imagine. Everytime I see a posted picture of one, I get impatient all over again, and even start thinking about proof stamps, import/export permits, expensive German licenses, etc, etc.

I would also like for S&W to make a 9mm revolver again. If they did, it is likely I would be the first on my block to get one.

Mike,

I suspect the recoil force was from the bullet entering the forcing cone, but I have no way of substantiating the suspicion. The bullet mix up was the only mistake in many years of reloading and it surely will not repeat.

December is rapidly approaching and you will soon meet your new girl. You must post photos of the happy event.

16shells,
Good thing you don't live on my block otherwise there would be a struggle.

I bought one of those little 547s when they first came out, and like a dumb A** I traded it.

It was a sweet shooting little revolver. The extracting system worked flawlessly. Even had speed loaders for it. Great little gun. It would shoot anything that resembled a 9mm, it wasn't picky like most of the semi's.

If I find one in good shape I'm getting it, don't care how many grandkids I have to sell in the slave trade to get it.

People love revolvers, hate bending over to pick up brass, and 9mm is the cheapest center-fire ammo available. Get on it S&W! Build these guns!

Where did you hear about Ruger making one that didn't use them?

I read about it on a foreign forum. Will have to see if I recorded the site. I also have a pair of Speed Sixes which require moon clips.

I never saw one, and I spent quite a bit of time with the Ruger folks. If they had it, and it worked, I don't know why they wouldn't have marketed it here.

A lot of 547 information in one place on this link.

Question is should I sell my 547?
It is LNIB and slight turn line. Very tempting to just go do it and than I can say I did.

I'd go for a re-issue of the 547, but why not add the option of a .38 Sp. or .357 conversion cylinder to go with it? Ruger sold a fair number of their Blackhawks with that option, and it's nothing S&W hasn't done before with the Mod. 53 and with some of their .45 LC/.45 ACP offerings. It was a while back, but I recall the reviews on the Ruger convertible Blackhawk found excellent accuracy with both 9mm and .357 ammunition.
I'm not sure about the idea of the .357 Sig in a revolver. It's a nice round, but probably not enough benefit to outweigh the difficulties. The history of the Model 53 illustrates the issues of shooting bottle-neck cartridges in a revolver. Granted, almost all the problems were traced back to people leaving oil in the chambers, but why ask for trouble. Bad enough to deal with the rimless cartridge extraction issues without adding in setback problems and the necessarily thinner chamber walls you'd need to accommodate the fatter rounds.

I'll add my vote for a new 547. In blue or stainless. I have greatly enjoyed my 3" example.

The added expense to manufacture would be quickly recouped by the lower ammo costs for those that hit the range regularly.

Played with a Charter Arms .40s&w snubbie a while back. They have the no moon clip cylinder down I was really impressed. Snappy loading no hangups ejecting. That was the problem I heard a while back with rimless cartridges. Smith could do it in 9mm and 40 there certainly is a market for defensive snubbies. Taurus makes a 9mm 'j-frame'.

I have a 547 I bought used back in the 80's. It didn't come with a shipping box or anything else. It had rubber grips. Bluing has no wear marks, except for a slight line where the slide stop drags over the cylinder, there is a faint line visible. I've only shot it a couple times. Shoots good. I'd let it go if I'm ever offered a price a can't refuse. I like the little gun, it doesn't eat, when not worked, so I'm in no hurry to sell it off.

This is such an awesome thread I wanted to put it back at the top. Sounds like these guys back in 2011 all wanted the 547 to to be brought back as badly as I do!
