Default How about a 3 Inch model 69?

I really like my model 696 L frame .44 Special, but I am concerned about shooting the hotter loads out of it due to the forcing cone thickness. I'm thinking a 3 inch 69 would do nicely for a carry gun and would be quite capable of handling the hotter .44 Special loads. And it would have the added advantage of being able to take the the magnum loads for those who don't mind beating themselves up. Perhaps even go with an unfluted cylinder?

It could look something like this:

Sounds like a winner to me, may Smith will agree and start making one.

I think the 4 1/4 inch barrel was done to make it legal for Canada.

I'm not usually interested in the newer S&W revolvers, but this is one I would seriously have to consider if it were available.

Actually, a 3" Model 69 would look more like this.

And I would be on that like a pit bull on a bone.

I'd buy two 8 3/8 inchers before my first 3 incher but I do not doubt 3 inchers would sell very well.

I would be on a 3" 69 like a fat boy on cake!

I've actually talked to my local gunsmith about making me one.

I've got a. 696 now but it's almost too nice to carry....

I'm curious what ideas he had. Member steelslaver posted that he had considered shortening the rear of the barrel and the front of its sleeve. However he does his own gunsmithing with his own machinery and free time while retired so he can do jobs that would be too expensive at a gunsmith. I don't think he did it but maybe he'll post that he did.

I think S&W will probably do this, sooner or later. I think the 4in is selling pretty well.

I emailed TALO with the suggestion. No response so far. I'm certain they could sell a ton of them. It would be the best .44 caliber EDC I can think of. Add a tritium front sight, too.

+1 on this idea.

I've posted threads in this section on, basically, 3 inch 'anything'!

While a niche product to S&W, 3 inch varieties of the 60, 629, etc. - heck even the 3" Shield, seem to sell quite well. I think this is because it's kind of a two-in-one deal. You get a concealable 3" tube with good 'shootability' (I think all guns are as accurate as the shooter) out to longer distances.

Default .41 mag three inch

I have to agree with Groo01. I'd like to see the 69 in a .41 mag 3 inch. I had a Taurus .41 mag in 2 3/4 inch 5 shot (I think it was a model 415). I liked it but because it was almost a K-size frame there were restrictions of no more than 210 gr bullet, no faster than 1300 fps. I think the model 69 on an L frame would be a great option with enough muscle to handle more potent .41 loads.

Default 3" S & W 629

Count me in. My 6" 629 is just to big and heavy to carry as a concealed weapon. 3" would be perfect.

How about a 5" barreled version to hang from the hip? Loaded to the max, a 200-grain slug will approach 1000 fps. Enough to "accomplish the mission" when called upon.
