I love the modular AR platform. And that's the main reason I chose the 15-22, because of S&W having the most faithful copy. There's other brands of AR copy .22 rifles, but they all have some design issues that I didn't really care for. I'd like to see S&W make a barrel, and whatever else would be needed to make their 15-22, into a .22 magnum. Or possibly go with the popular .17 caliber, or both, and maybe more.
I know that some people hunt squirrels, or raccoons, possum and the like. But a more powerful option, would, in my opinion, open up more possibilities.
And I would certainly hope that the new caliber rifles would have an alloy upper, and lower receiver. Giving the 15-22 options that are modular, just like the AR that it's copied from, and covering some of the smaller calibers that it's big brother doesn't offer.
This popular little rifle has really caught on because it's just so much fun to shoot. It's reliable, and reasonably well made. I'd really love to see the manufacturer invest a little more into upping the quality, and versatility of this great little gun. I think S&W would find out that if they'd just tweak this rifle, and expand the platform, they'd have a gold mine on their hands. In my opinion it has the potential to dwarf the 10/22 industry. Having only to change the upper, and the magazine, to change caliber, is one of the best features of the AR 15. So how bout it Smith? Wanna bring in a new instant classic? Doesn't every company want to take their particular market by storm? All the really hard work is done, it's a proven design, whose popularity is beyond question. In fact, the only question left is, what are you waiting for?
