Default If you could design your own S&W revolver.....

1)What would it be?

2)Taking it one step further, which out of production revolver would you want S&W to bring back?

These are two separate questions just to make things interesting.

Mine would be:

1) a 4" N frame with fixed sights in .357, .45 acp, or .45 Colt

2) Model 58

Reissue the 4" standard-barrel M64 and/or 10-5.

And, be still my heart, the K32. Or the equivalent in stainless. What a lovely plinker, small game and range gun that would be!

I have always thought of having a line of N and K frames offered in a highly polished Black Forrest Green ( like a blued finish but different ) with a saftey orange front sight insert , and nice wood grips.

Smith should introduce a Model 58 in .44 mag.

Scandium-frame K-frame round butt; 2, 3, 4 inch tapered, pinned barrel; .38 Special; or 3, 4 inch pinned heavy barrel .357 Magnum with "Pro" or black front sight. No lock on either version. Call it a Model 312 or Model 313.

Or

Bring back the Model 12-4 round butt with pinned, tapered barrels in 2, 3, or 4 inch in .38 Special with no lock.

Shouldn't this thread be in "The Wish List" section, created for just such musings?

That said,
1) K32 in .327 Magnum with 8-3/8" barrel - like this:

2) Triple Lock in all its variations and original style finish.

3" round butt K-frame, 5-shot .357. Fixed sights, with the front sight narrowed at the top, McGivern gold bead set into the top of the ramp. Vertical cut of the rear sight in bright orange. Hammer shroud a la S&W M49. Non-ported pinned barrel. Smooth combat trigger, case hardened, as would be the hammer. Non-IL. Blued would be nice, but SS would be acceptable.

I already have a nickled M58 4", so, I'm good with the oldies.

1. An 8 shot 9mm version of the 325 Thunder Ranch Performance Center revolver. Given Australia's 10 round mag limits, this revolver would do pretty well in terms of sales.

2. Maybe the 547 9mm revolver.

1. I would love to have a K Frame in 9mm. Nothing fancy, just like a 4” (3” too!!) Model 66 with Partridge front sight. Maybe a 4” model 17.

2. Please bring back the 4 inch barreled model 14 with the full underlug!!!! Preferably with a round butt.

1) 45 ACP in a 3 inch barrel. No lock, round butt, fixed sights w/gold bead front. Basically a lock-less concealable version of the 45 ACP JM.

2) Nothing more that a reissue of the model 13/65 combo in 3 inch barrels. No locks, no changes - just about perfect!

1) 22 M&P K-frame, blue, square butt, no lock, 2" & 3" barrels, 6-shooter

2) Wouldn't bring back any -- the old ones are okay by me.

What "new" design? A Model 616 like my project gun, a K-frame stainless in 327 FM with pinned barrel and recessed chambers (no lock, of course!) It should come in choice of 4, 6, or 8 3/8" barrel and although I prefer a square butt, I wouldn't argue about RB since adaptor grips are so commonly available. Yes, I built my own, as Project 616 but I shouldn't have had to!

As for reintroductions, the dream of dreams would be a Triplelock Target in modern steels and chambered in 44 Special or even Magnum. Just as desirable to me at least would be a 6" K-32 or Model 16 (up through a dash 3 version.) Again, I'm having a Model 16-3 recreated as this is written, but why should I have to??

There are quite a few legitimate candidates for introduction or reintroduction, but I'd be willing to bet that even in today's somewhat slowed gun sales environment, each of the three listed above would be a huge success, but what do I know?

Froggie

PS reintroduction of flat spring I-frames would be kinda nice...

The one I've always wanted ............... a

round butt, 3 inch, 19 w/recessed cylinder , hammer mounted firing pin............................ or a 4 inch round butt 66 w/ recessed cylinder ....
either/both with front night sight and factory round butt target grips shortened to match the grip frame.

Always wished Smith had produced a 6-shot
snub revolver in Colt D-frame size with the
typical K-frame lockwork.

Never liked the J-frame.

They did. That was the Model 73 C frame. Apparently they could not get them right, scrapped most of the ones made, the few survivors are way expensive.

New production, I would like to see a 3" K frame with high visibility fixed sights like Ted Yost makes only not custom expensive.

OK, interchangeable length barrels, 2 to 15 inch barrels, easy to switch out in 5 minutes or less. Stronger crane latch, better single action trigger, stronger frame for heavy loads, and that lovely dark royal blue finish.....available in several different calibers.
Am I dreaming or did someone already do this?????

They call that a Dan Wesson. Although I don't get the "better single action trigger" bit. My Smiths have wonderful SAs. The only DW I shot much was good but not great.

Resurect the triple lock.
Resurect all number 3 models.

Edit. And this time with a better reverse engineer then the one that did the Schofield.

If the L frame with fixed sights is 681/581 would a 696 in blue with fixed sights be a 591?
Three inch barrel is right for this L frame in 44SPL. That's the one I'd like to see.

Keith44spl made a 44 spl reg mag and turned an outdoorsman into a Triple-Lock. Pretty close! While he's at it, might as well make me one too!

Re-design the frame so the middle finger is where it is with grip adaptor. That frame with a K round butt, 5 shot L frame .45 ACP with heavy duty moon clips. 2.5" barrel with old man easy to see fixed sights. If it has to have a stupid lock, one that doesn't disable the gun if it malfunctions.

I love the 629 backpacker, mountain backpacker and classic carry revolvers. I'd take any variation of those plus a 29

I'd like a blue or stainless 5" K frame .327 Federal Magnum with the half lug barrel. Adjustable rear and a Baughman front sight.

Also, how about bringing back the 1 1/2 top break in .22 Long rifle, with an additional .22 Magnum cylinder.

Added specs for mine:
Pinned barrel, recessed chambers (if a magnum), and a hammer nose (firing pin mounted on the hammer). If only one finish allowed, make it blue, but if possible offer in ss also, especially black stainless. Forget the target hammer and target trigger, just target stocks.

To me, the first 3 are no-brainers and I have no idea why they aren't made already. The last one is more niche, but would be awesome. I would buy any and all of these instantly if S&W made them.

1.) 2" barrel / 6 shot / I frame / 327 Magnum (the ultimate pocket gun). I also think if they shrank it down a bit more and made it a 5 shot I'd be just as interested, and it would be an even better pocket gun.

2.) A S&W version of the Taurus 617 - 7 shot K frame .38 or .357 snubbie with a J frame-ish grip that weighs <25 oz. Why don't they make this already?

3.) 3" 625JM (I would have bought one this week but instead bought a 3" 629 I plan to cut for moon clips and shoot .44 Russian)

4.) 3" M21

Ultimately, the first 2 are a modernization of the revolver concept. As more people carry guns, they are looking for more options and many of S&W traditional options have become antiquated. Modern metallurgy should allow for a subcompact purpose-built pocket revolver like #1, and #2 is just building the perfect belt carried snubbie.

The other thing S&W really should have done many years ago is modernize their grip design. With their current 100+ year old design, if you use a set of stocks that covers the backstrap, your hand moves further away from the trigger, which IMO gets awkward fast if you shoot DA. Ruger's guns with the square-ish grip frame that is designed to be covered by the grip are designed to provide a covered backstrap while keeping the backstrap to trigger distance the same. Both my GP100 and my LCR327 are much more comfortable to shoot than my S&W equivalents because of that modernized grip design. I'm not saying S&W should change all their guns, but I'd suggest a limited line of guns with modernized grips - maybe just a alloy frame J and K frame 357.
