Model 57 In A Smaller Pkg.
I sure do wish S&W would do a model 57 in a shorter barrel than just the 6" version. A 3.5-4" version would be nice too. Can only find those on the used market.

When the 4”was a regular catalog option, they were the slowest sellers.

I have never heard that before, but if so, it’s a shame. 4-inch 57s are very nice guns. They don’t seem quite as vicious as 4-inch Model 29s, and all were made with cylinder dimensions perfectly suited to both jacketed and cast loads with bullets in the .410-.411” diameter range.

I can’t back that up with actual production figures, just my observation over the last 40 .years or so. The shorter barrels have gained popularity in the past 10-15 years. Exception might be the the model 27/28, but the other N frames seem to be mostly 6 or 6-1/2”, followed by the 8-3/8” which was preferred by some hunters and silhouette shooters.

What you are looking for is the 4" Mountain Gun. Unfortunately they are as rare as hens teeth.

They're somewhat scarce? Who knew?
Model 57 "no dash."
They're out there. You might have to look for them.
Funny thing is I guess, I don't care anything about the cartridge. I bought it just because it was about the best looking "N-frame" I've ever seen. I'm not sure if I wouldn't rather have a 44 or even a 357 if I had found one as nice.

They may have been slow sellers but that is the perfect size for me. It's funny how Ruger is enjoying big success with their short barreled guns in double and single action but this was pulled off the Smith production. It's a very handy size. Sure, a .357 or .44 that size is very nice but there is something extra cool about a .41 mag revolver.
