.38 Maximum.
I wish ammo manufacturers would produce a .38/.38 +P cartridge in a .357 Mag length casing so one doesn't have to deal with the powder fouling that comes with firing the shorter .38 Special cartridges in a .357.

Just buy some 357 in a 158 grain lrn bullet-Basically is a 38+p load and can be found online. I have recently been loading a lot of 357 with 145 hbwc with 38 special load- a must is reloading your own....if you shoot a lot.

Or you could just roll your own. The reason a lot of us got into reloading is to produce exactly the load we want and not have to rely on factory loadings.

I roll my own using 357 brass, but never had a problem with carbon rings if cleaned after each range session.

I got my first .357 Magnum in 1989 (S&W 686-3) and I can only imagine how many rounds I’ve sent down range with it, many thousands, the bulk of them being .38 Special and plenty in .357 as well. I think I have ten different .357’s now and shoot lots of both ammo in ‘em and I guess we are approaching 30 years now and I still have never witnessed this phantom problem that keeps so many awake at night.
