Revolvers S&W "Should" have made??
Looking through the group I wondered what I would want if it had been produced. I yield to the superior knowledge if I missed one that exists?
N frame 22 magnum 12 shot target?
32 long in an N frame?
Was there a revolver that was almost made but dropped before production??
Just curious....

I always wondered why they didn't make a 5 shot K frame .44 special.

A 5" K Frame in .327 Federal would be nice. I have always thought an N Frame .22 would be cool too.

There were a few but not regular production: Model 29 with fixed sites and no ejector rod under lug ala Model 58.

I would love to have a model 658, a stainless steel 41 Magnum Military & Police. Another variation would have a shrouded ejector rod and be a stainless steel 41 Magnum Heavy Duty.

Supposedly there is...ONE. A special order RM in 22 LR. Disappeared in California many years ago... but it's out there somewhere

Another vote for a .327 Fed Mag revolver in a K-frame, with a 6" bbl that has many practical uses, instead of .32 cal (H&R mag and Fed Mag) J-frames that were relegated to mainly SD use.

In the 1896-1961 time frame this is posted in, I can't think of too many fantasy guns that would be smart with the calibers and metallurgy of the time. When the revolver was king, S&W did a pretty great job at keeping up with the market.

Along this line of reasoning, I'd like to see a 61010mm with fixed sights.

Two come to mind
A 3" 65 NL .... the Model 65 LadySmith without the "LadySmith". A revolver version of the 3913NL.
A 3" round butt 681.

I know of a Model 53 in .22 Hornet, because I shot it. It was in the early 1970's. I was carrying a Model 53 as a duty gun along with a Model 27 or a Model 29, depending which Sam Browne duty belt I put on. Smith & Wesson asked to to come in and try it. It was amazing, no shells stuck! For some reason, it never went further.

The threesome of the Beakert 22 lr, 22 mag and 32 long would have been great. Back in the day it would have had to be the 22 WRF, but still would be a cool trio.

The one I would suggest has already been proposed... the K frame 327. In fact, I’ve had one built (see Project 616) in stainless with a 4” barrel, but not everyone has the contacts and resources to do this for themselves.
I can’t understand why 32s of whatever length sold so slowly in the ‘50s through the ‘70s but are so popular now. Part is lack of ability I suppose, but a bigger reason may be the rise in popularity of reloading, making performance ammo more readily available. I fear the ship carrying new versions of S&W revolvers has left the dock and is headed for the horizon.

Agreed. I have a pair of Taurus .44s from the 1990s-early 2000s that are K-frame sized, fixed-sight 5-shot revolvers, the Model 431. I have a 2-1/2" in blue and a 3" in stainless. They fit in all of my K-frame holsters. Really good fit and finish, they're well-executed examples of what S&W should have made....

I would like to get a 6 shot N frame 44 mag length cylinder with .308 throats. Then ream it to use shortened, blown out 30-30 case at 36,000psi a slightly shortened 30 Herrett. Be interesting in .257 too.
Kind of a 25 or 30 jet

There was a custom Ruger BH set up like that for .30 Herrett Short (I forget what he actually called it.) He found a load that would not set back the bottleneck case and bind the cylinder, a hot number.
A custom S&W oddity was the "K 25"; using .22 Hornet brass blown out straight.

Circa 1964:
If the 41 Magnum had been introduced in a model based on a Highway Patrolman (mdl 28) format. Such a "working man's" big bore magnum may have given a jump start to the then nascent handgun hunting trend.
Indeed the .41 Magnum n-frame guns had sufficient mass in the cylinder to be virtually immune to most of the longevity problems that plagued the S&W 44 Magnum revolvers of the time.

Ya but one cylinder-full without hearing protection would have left the shooter deaf. I shot my 10" TC 22 Hornet one time, ONE TIME without ear plugs.
And it was a throttled back load.

This, a 637, blown up to K Frame size, but a 6 shot, of course.
It would be a lightweight, +P rated 6 shooter. Man. They would sell a boatload of 'em.

I've always wanted a 357 Maximum in a 8 3/8" barreled Model 27; or even a Model 586. I would even love to try a Model 19 in a 357 Max although that might be a little much for that cut-down barrel.
I'm betting the N frame and the L frame would be a spectacular combo with a Max cartridge. Just open that cylinder window up a touch and we would have an incredible long range shooter.
I realize that Smith revolvers are probably relegated to Yesteryear, but a guy can dream can't he.
Prescut
Or a K frame 327fm.

Guns S&W should have made...or should be making...
Model 35 6" J-frame Target with an extra .22 Magnum cylinder
Model 69 in .41 Magnum
An L-frame .41 Special
Model 53/19 in .327 Federal
Model 60-10 .357 Magnum and .327 Magnum with a 5" barrel
Snubbies in .38 Super...a MUCH better round for the little guns than the .38 Special or 9mm and not as much blast as a .357 Magnum...
Model 58 in .44 Magnum and .45 Colt
Model 58 in stainless (658) in 3" and 4" with a round butt in .41, .44 and .45 Colt
...well we can wish can't we...Bob

Big Sky
My thoughts, as always, the Mountain Gun in
.22lr, 357Rem Mag, .41Rem Mag, .44Rem Mag,
and .45Colt.
The Mountain Gun series seems to always be
popular and I enjoy having them.
Thank you

What S&W should have made ... should make right now ...
443344
618 ... You know!!! What could be better than the very best .22 LR revolver ever made but produced in stainless steel ... with interchangeable front sights as w/ the .44 Magnum Classic revolvers.
686 ... with interchangeable barrels that could be installed by the owner using a button/screw lock. Just imagine being able to take a L-frame and trick it out in .357 Magnum w/ whatever length barrel suited your needs ... then taking the same frame and using it w/ a change of cylinder and barrel(s) to shoot .44 Magnum!
952 ... Again ... you know! Chamber up that beauty in 9mm w/ a match chamber and hammer forged barrel, etc. Mill or D/T the top of the slide to accommodate optics as well as the normal iron sights. Use a steel frame and use a SA trigger w/ a short reset. That would be just the thing for punching paper ... or ... whatever.
Last but not least ...
I know, I know, it's already been said but I'll say it again ...
K-frame ... blued or stainless ... 3 - 4 inch barrel ...
chambered in .327 Magnum!!! Yea Boy!!!
JMHO. Merry Christmas! Sincerely. bruce.

I vote for you to be head of product mngtmt for S&W. Of course when they had sold the 200 of each and went bankrupt. They would probably fire you and take away my vote..........

I've suggested this before; a .22lr N Frame with 15 shot cylinder. If they can already get 8 x .22 in a J Frame and 10 x .22 in a K Frame, surely you could get 15 into an N Frame. It would also get around some States and Countries with 10 round mag limits.
Could be all stainless steel or something along the lines of the M&P R8 and 327 TRR8.

I’d like a Night Guard 8 shot 327 with a 3 1/2” barrel like the 27s that we all love.

This would be a "take my money" gun for me, especially if it is a 6 shooter. But, now Smith can say solved problem, buy an M&P.

I just found this thread, but have always thought about an alloy framed kit gun in 32 S&W Long - maybe even in H&R Mag. Have to be blued with walnut, no silver alloy or rubber grips. Basically a centerfire model 43 with a 4" bbl, would prefer a RB, but since I'm dreaming I'd take SB too! Thanks, Bill in MA
