Fixed sight revolvers

I am a great fan of the S&W Models 10, 64, 581, 24, 57, etc. As long as the sights are close to POI they're the better choice IMO.

Fixed sight 4" barrel can't be beat for a house or carry gun.

I second that!
I have adjustable sight revolvers and after they are sighted in never move the sights again.
Like k-frame fixed sight revolvers the best. Wish I could find more that I could afford.

Adjustable sights for me. Although I own a couple of fixed sight revolvers, including a S&W model 10. Adjustable sights are easier to see and if one shoots at any distance, they are invaluable when using different ammo. I carried adjustable sight revolvers for many years and never had any issue with durability.

Back in the 1970s the Model 10-6 was the issue sidearm for uniform police
officers in Boise. The Model 10-5 with 2" barrel was what the plain cloths
guys carried. I never heard any complaints.

Fixed sight handguns are probably the best for a carry piece/home defense gun. The front sight is all I have ever used in one of those scenarios.

An adjustable sighted gun is great for hunting/target work, where you have time to align the sights.

When they are dead on for you they are heard to beat. Charlie Askins said he sighted in the Colt New Services issued to the Border Patrol in the 1930s, said he made a tool to adjust the front sights for windage though he gave no details.

I painted the front sights on my carry guns (2" Taurus 856 [L], 4" S&W 65 [R]) with neon orange fingernail polish. I don't have any pistols or revolvers with adjustable sights.

Agreed, fixed sight revolvers are the ultimate no frills handgun. I would love to see the 619,681, and 64 make a comeback ... especially with three inch barrels. Fixed sight stainless N frames would be awesome as well.

I also like fixed sight guns better. The Model 13 I was issued (my last issued revolver) was my favorite duty weapon.

Sometimes things are a bit off, however...

I have a 37 snub and 10-5 snub that print way high. Only with 110 gr high velocity loads to they hit close to POA.

I was trained by IDF Military that have no use for adjustable sights, snap shooting they call it here, in Israel its 7,10, 25 M ( not yds) timed. The Best wheel gun I own is a Mdl 10-4 and a 4 inch 28 that has gutter (fixed) sights.

I have no used for a fixed sighted gun outside of a j frame. For my uses of hunting or paper punching, I always want adjustable sights. It's one of the few things I agree with Elmer Keith on.

I have always liked snubby sixguns (five-guns, too) with fixed sights. After years spent shooting Vaqueros in Cowboy Action games fixed sights are a natural for me.

and a 681, with a 3 inch barrel.

There are some pretty nice revolvers posted above. I'm officially jealous!

During my police career, I carried a Model 60, a Model 65, and a Model 58 the last few years. I always qualified expert.

I might add that I carried a Model 19 early on. In a tussle with a hit and run driver (after the chase) the rear sight blade was broken off, even with the weapon in a very good quality and protective Hoyt holster. That never would have happened with my 65 or 58. I still have all of those old service revolvers and they get to go to range now and then.

Years ago when almost every LE holster had a revolver, S&W armorers figured out how to correct the POI with fixed sights if it was off.

This involved a 2 pound block of babbitt. You can guess how it was done. I can say I saw it used and it worked. Dont try this at home.

I only wish I'd have got 2 or 3 of those surplus Model 10s a year or two back. I have a 10-8 in so-so condition, finish wise around the side plate & cylinder release side but it shoots excellent from the 25 yard line. Never was able to try it any further. Great for a house gun (I hope to never give a report on that.)

The single revolver on my Wish List is for S&W to bring back the K frame, 4 inch barrel, .22 Rimfire. Right now I can't recall the model number but think it was the M-45. I would buy three or four....

I never had any problems with adjustable sights and they sure are easier to see.

Glad I’m “ adaptive” with what I carry, depends on where I’m going. I Avoid bad areas unless have to drive through them on the way to some supply house that carry what I need, have given up on Home-Depo and most Lowes.

My only fixed sight S&W is my M58, but I do have two non S&W's with fixed sights, a Taurus 5-shot .38Spl and a 5-shot Rossi .38Spl.

I have a friend that does not like fixed sights. Frankly, I like em. I had a couple model 10's that I did not shoot and sold. I have a 1968 M10-5, that I have considered selling but so far have been able to resist. D138 ,1968, and it is just too nice. Pictured below.
I had a M65 the first day they were available. That thing would shoot. In my LEO days , the last time I qualified combat I shot 248/250. Yeah I traded it. Just one in a long line of mistakes. I drove it to the factory and had a tt/TH/red ramp put on it. They charged you pennies if you were LEO. Action was slicked up too.

Yes.

It can also be done with a file. On my M64, I used a safe edged file on the right side of the notch. It shot left, and I removed a little bit at a time until it hit center at 25 Yards. It didnt take much.

They are out there. I just picked up this 4" 64-8. For $359.

Picked this up off GB only to find the barrel wasn’t clocked correctly and the front sight was too high. Had to go back home but now it’s the way it should have left the factory. Plus Ken’s grips.

I read (and have tested) that S&W zeroed their fixed sight 38 and 357 revolvers with 158 grain loads.
Anyone know the bullet weights they used to zero their other caliber fixed sight revolvers?

My old duty revolver (Model 65-1), my last backup (Model 12-2 retired to the safe), what replaced my last backup (Taurus 856), my old off duty/plainclothes revolver (Model 13-3 to my S-I-L), and the revolver my late wife claimed (Model 681 to my granddaughter's husband).

Slight typo on model number ... model 57 is adjustable sighted 41 magnum . Model 58 is the fixed sighted 41 magnum .
