Triple Alpha prefix .... Year ..... Model

Example:

CEV - 2001 - Mod. 686

We especially need this for revolvers after 2004 and pistols after 1998. Standard production guns are more useful than special production runs.

Here's the new intro to the Triple Alpha serial number table in SCSW4:

........................................................

THE DREADED TRIPLE-ALPHA SERIAL NUMBER RANGES

Between 1980 and 1983 all models were transitioned to a serial number system that consists of three letters followed by 4 numerical digits.

The first models numbered with this system are the L frames, which were introduced at the same type as the new serial system.

These triple-alpha serial number prefixes were “sort-of” used in alphabetical order (i.e. AAA, followed by AAB, followed by AAC, etc.) Except when they weren’t. There are numerous examples where a three letter prefix was used completely out of sequence. Often this was for a special production run, and sometimes the letters would have some significance to the particular model. Oh yeah… and some letter combinations were just skipped. And some weren’t used to completion.

The best we can do here is provide a listing of when some of the general dates when particular triple-alpha prefixes were reported or observed. You may be able to make an educated guess based on this. (You may be completely wrong, good luck with that.) For the reader whose life is not complete until he can bake an annual birthday cake for his favorite gun, our advice is to spring for a factory letter. Those are definitive. (As we may have mentioned before. Several times.)

OR… TRY THIS – your gun’s DOB is marked on the box:

A final note about modern serial numbers : In most cases a fired cartridge case was supplied with each gun and is dated when the cartridge was collected - and each box end label is marked with a Julian date (example 0212 is the 212th day of 2000) . These 2 dates are usually no more than 2 days apart indicating when a handgun was completed and ready for shipping .

Reported triple-alpha sightings, revolvers:
1980 – AAA
1981 – AAD
1982 – AAF, ABL
..... etc .......

Reported triple-alpha, semi-auto pistols
1984 – TAA-TAD
1986 – TAK
1987 – TAT, TBC-TBL
..... etc ......
so can I assume my model 439 with TBJ is a 1987?

We just took delivery of 400+ M&P9 2.0 full size for our new duty firearms that shipped on 5/20/19 from the factory. In true S&W random fashion, there are only a handful of consecutive serial numbered pairs, and 3-5 groups that are 3 units in alpha-numeric order, and none more than three. Anyway, prefixes are as follows:
NDN: only five in shipment, all in the 83xx to 84xx range
NDP: most of shipment is in this block, 42xx up to 961x
NDR: second most common block in order, 15xx to 37xx
NDS: 11 from this block, 64xx to 71xx
NDT: a small number of these, all below 130x

For what its worth, these shipped from the factory in large boxes of 40 weapons per. There was absolutely no order or pattern to how they were boxed. Consecutive pairs came out of separate boxes, or maybe in same box, but rarely packed with each other. We have 200 more full sizes and 80 compacts on the way as well and I will update with that info when we get them.

I bought a Nickle 686-3 with serial # BBE 64XX. Can someone give me any info on it? It's brand new never fired but the owner must have thrown the box away!
Thanks, Bob

Default DONE THROUGH HERE

Thanks for the ongoing help on triple-alpha s/n's!

A reminder of what we need here:
* MODEL
* TRIPLE ALPHA SERIAL PREFIX
* DATE OF MANUFACTURE, TESTING, or SHIPPING (mainly just the year).

This is probably not the best place on the forum to ask "When was my gun made?" Folks will generally be very helpful if you post that elsewhere.
