WTB: Model 2 Army parts

Hi. Looking for a mainspring and hand (part that rotates the cylinder) for a S&W Model 2 Army. Possibly other parts to make it function. Experts, please check out my pics and see if I need other parts.

Hi. I'm trying to fix a Model 2 Army and I think all I need is a mainspring and a hand to rotate the cylinder. If anyone has these parts or can point me in the right direction I'd love to hear from you. Also, if you could check out the pics, maybe you can tell me if I missed something I need, like maybe a pin or screw to hold the hand in place? Thanks a lot.

Hi Ryan,
I'm an Antique S&W guy. I don't spend much time here but I might make some useful suggestions about your #2 Army. Beside the two parts you (correctly) have stated that you need, check the front of the hammer to see if you have the "Hand Spring". The photos show the pin that holds the spring, but, is it there or broken? It will lay in the slot cut on the front of the hammer and will extend down below the "hole" where the Hand pivot goes. The Hand "pin or screw" is actually a pivot post that is part of the Hand. It has a flat milled on the end of the post that, when installing, will allow one to lift the end of the Hand Spring and insert the Hand into the Hammer. Another "flat" makes the Hand 'spring' out to engage the cylinder. No fasteners needed. Once you have the Hand it will be obvious.

Now for the hard part. Check with Dave Chicoine (oldwestgunsmith.com) as he or his son may have the part or will make it. There are other vendors of old/obsolete S&W parts, but he/they are the best.

OK, this is getting long, but have you looked at the "Split Spring" that actuates the Cylinder Stop? If it is broken (it pinches together like a clothspin and the 'nose' on the top of the Hammer goes through it - splitting it - upon firing) it is difficult to find. Again, check with Dave. Mike #283

Thanks for your detailed reply Mike. The hand spring is not there, so I guess I'll have to find that part as well. I found a schematic of this gun and what I thought was the hand on it I now think is the hand spring, now that you've mentioned it. It looks like a long, thin piece of metal, not a coiled up piece of wire, right? As far as the split spring, it is there and appears to be in good working order. Thank god for small miracles. I do have an e-mail in to Dave Chicoine and I'm waiting for a reply. It seems like sometimes they take a while to reply to e-mail, but I couldn't find a phone number on the website. Do they take phone calls?

You can also try Jack First, Gun Parts Corporation (Numerich) or Ron Curtis (Smith and Wesson Model 2 Army Revolver). Keep searching; the parts are out there. Mike#283
