Default How to NOT get Scammed

How to NOT get Scammed-
Use your head.
If you place a WTB ad, anyone, anywhere in the whole wide world with internet access can see your ad.
If you post your email in the ad, you can be contacted by a scammer that is not even a member! Even if the scammer is a member, we probably won't be able to check him out if your initial contact is via email because he might use an email separate from the one he registered with.
Do NOT put your email in your ad!

LOOK at the member responding to your ad.
Is he brand new?
Has he EVER posted? Some scammers DO build up a post count by quickly making some posts by cutting and pasting real posts from the net or simply making a lot of short posts, so rely mainly on the JOIN DATE.
Did he join this Forum JUST to reply to WTB ads???

Most scammers working here are preying on WTB ads. They send you a PM that looks like this:
Quote:
Hello, have got one at the moment and it available for sale,ig you are still in search of it,you can reach me via my email.
[email protected]
See the obvious in that PM?
LOOK at the guy that just answered your WTB ad!
LOOK at his profile at top right of the PM-

WAY too many of you are replying to these PMs you are receiving! We work very hard to protect you, but YOU have the responsibilty of at least L@@KING at the guy contacting you!
IF you think you have been contacted via PM by a scammer, use the at top right of every PM and post on this board to REPORT that PM! Every member of the Staff can see that report, and it will be investigated ASAP. The report includes a copy of the PM, so you don't have to tell us what it says. DO tell us why you are reporting it. If you send a PM to me or an individual Mod, it may be a day or two.
Don't Worry about being wrong! We investigate them thoroughly, so no harm/no foul if you are wrong.

DON'T post your email in your ad. Spammers and scammers will be harvesting it. Again, anybody, anyhwere in the world.......

ASK for a phone number when someone replies to your ad. Talking to someone can tell you a lot.

BEWARE of a seller who wants to be paid via a wire transfer.

PICS- If, after talking on the phone, you still have any doubt, ask for a pic of the gun or item pictured with a piece of paper that has your first name and today's date HANDWRITTEN on it, and one corner folded over on the paper. I say handwritten so that they don't simply create a pic with photoshop that has a white block added in with your name typed in!

SKYPE- A good way to see who you're dealing with and verify that the seller actually has the item is through an online video call with Skype. You'll need a webcam for your computer, but most tablets and phones already have one built in. The software is free and there's no charge for calls.

We now have scammers that are joining and waiting a month or two to pounce. In the meantime, they make generic posts like "Really nice gun!" or "Welcome aboard" or "Sorry to hear that.". If they make a post that contains real data about a topic, it is often copied from other forums.
So, here is an IMPORTANT tool for you guys to use in checking out a suspect--
Copy one sentence or partial sentence from a post, and do a Google search with that phrase "IN QUOTES".

Examples:
If you want to see the full threads, click the link at top right of the posts after you open them---

Again, use your head. It's at the top end of your neck if you haven't used it lately.
MOST folks you deal with in the gun world are honest, but the wolves do prowl the woods.
