The toads around here (American Toad) secrete a "don't mess with me" fluid that makes dogs & other critters drool bad and can slow down the heart rate so much as to kill the critter. The good news, the taste of this fluid is so awful, most critters drop the toad FAST and keep their mouths away. Jazper learned about the taste some time ago and now just torments and sometimes smushs the toads in an effort to "play" with them. Lately she just watches them and leaves them alone. My vet asked about Jazper salivating/drooling bad to ascertain if she had encountered a toad/frog....if she had we'd have had to take her to the vet's office right away, like you did.
