The S&W knives are made in China and are screaming buys these days with some under $10. Decent quality for the money too. Remington closed their cutlery factory in 1940 and I have no clue where they're being made today.
I'd suggest caution when buying by brand name as even the big ones like you mention have had knives made for them by others or in China. Also, knife brands are bought and sold frequently. The steel in knives under $100 will all be pretty much the same so I'd go to a big box store and handle several. Pick the one you like best and you're good to go.
