The serial number is 1431. The pre 39s started production at number 1001 for reasons I never understand. It was shipped on 2-7-1956 to Harvan Sporting Goods in New York City, New York.
Interesting to see the early (pre) 39! The open magazine and shorter decocker lever caught my eye.

I went bonkers and bought two 39s at a gun show this weekend; a series one Model 39, and a Model 39-2. Another vendor there had two magazines with the S & W stamp on the baseplate. The guns appear to be 80% plus condition.

Both shoot like nobody's business and have glassy smooth actions. They eagerly consume JHPs and truncated ball. I think I could hide them better than my Glock 26 when I'm CCW.
