The 45 Smith & Wesson cartridge for the 1875 Schofield revolver was sometimes called the 45 Short Colt.

It and the 45 Colt were in use by the Army at the same time.

The S&W did not have a long enough cylinder to take the 45 "Long" Colt, so for a while the "Short" 45 S&W was the issue cartridge as it would also fire in the Colt Single Action Army...

Some people thing Gen. Custer used a Schofield revolver at the Little Big Horn...
