I recently bought a Lew Horton 624 with the 3" barrel. There was no box with the gun. The serial number prefix was ALVXXX which was in the range of the recalled guns. I was concerned about it being one of the recalled guns. I called Smith and Wesson and gave them my serial number. After a few hours, they called me back and said my gun was OK.
They can check your serial number to see if it was sent back and checked or shipped in a different time period.
There were approximately 500 guns shipped that could be affected that left the Smith and Wesson factory from January 1st thru June 8, 1985. Mine left the factory on June 21st 1985.
