Point Reyes National Seashore has a herd of Tule Elk that is overpopulating the park. The NPS and the locals (Marin County) will not allow a hunt to thin the herd and CDFG will not allow the Elk to be transported out of the area because of exposure to diseases by the surrounding Dairy Cattle. So the NPS used birth control. They darted the elk and injected them with some form of birth control. I happened to visit the park and I asked one of the Rangers how that was going. His response was that it worked fine the first year but that they have not been able to get close enough to dart them again. It seems they walked up behind a horse to dart them but the Elk are now wise to this trick. I personally think they should bring is a couple of Mountain Lions or maybe reintroduce the California Grizzley Bear.
