I saw someone else had romoved the bottom third of an Uncle Mikes three Finger Combat Grip for a J frame. I got overly curious and destructive and gave it a try. My 637 isn't your 642 but it's pretty close. The small bit of extra rubber over the original gives you a better hold and covers the metal in the back.
