I have three, one just like the one fat tom sold. I bought it 5-6 years ago for 400 dollars, and it's probably worth around 550 now, I would guess.
In my view they do make 'dandy range guns'; they're very accurate, dampen recoil somewhat with the extra weight out front, and take full advantage of slow-burning powders for highest velocity loads(if that is what one wants). I use my 686 8-3/8 for hunting groundhogs, and if I were still a deer hunter I'd use my 629 Classic DX 8-3/8 for that.
