Since there is zero room for a vice, I took a chance and put a wrench on it and gave it a light tap. It came loose. I tightened the barrel nut while I had it off. When I replaced the f/h, I just snugged it up a bit without really torqueing on it. The upper isn't very expensive from what I've read.
