For 20+ years I worked as a contractor in Federal Buildings and Federal Courthouses.

I always noticed that the U.S. Marshalls, IRS C.I.D., U.S. Probation, and Fish and Wildlife officers all came into the building armed and left the same way.

When they were at their desks or out and about in the building, their holsters were always empty.

I saw them lock their weapons in their desks or in a common lockbox shared by others in their office.

Only exception was the Court Security Officers, they were always armed on federal property.

Never understood this.
