If you haven't started yet, I would recommend a soak in Corrosion X. Remove grips and saturate a rag with Corrosion X and wipe the gun thoroughly and let stand for a day, then wipe off with a paper towel. Depending on results repeat again a couple times. Stubborn rust can be attacked by bronze wool and most any good oil such as break free or corrosion X.
