In a sense, but it wasn't actually designed at S&W. The patent and design of the .25 Clement auto were acquired and modified to produce the .35 semiautomatic. The gun was further redesigned to produce the .32 automatic in 1921.
After WWII the company developed internally the semiauto that became known as the Model 39 (as well as other models of the same general design). That's really the first S&W semi-auto the way I look at the world.
