You may likely already know this, but if you run an ATF Etrace you may be able to find the last owner of record. Any private sale since then would require luck to find the last owner. But, its a start. A lot of people do not have a record of their serial numbers so when stolen it cannot be entered into NCIC, obviously.

I run about 100 Etraces per year. I've got lucky with a couple, finding they were un-entered stolen guns.
