False choice: just because one uses .357 doesn't mean they'll live; and just because one chooses a smaller caliber doesn't mean they'll die.
Add a wrinkle: what if choosing .357 means a first shot that misses also jars your senses to the point that you can't shoot well on the followups and
that kills you, whereas a smaller caliber with less flash, bang and concussion (in a dark, enclosed space) saves you because you can stay on target until it's down?
Things to consider...there's no perfect solution, only a series of compromises.
